Growing up in the hardly diverse city of Richmond was not easy for a Chinese girl. Phrases like “All Asians look alike”, “All Asians can’t drive,” and “All Asians eat dogs,” became ingrained in my mind. Images of kids pulling the corner of their eyes while singing “Ling Ling” or “Ching Chong” became a video stuck on replay in my subconscious. In elementary through high school, on my dance and sports teams, and at after school daycare programs, I was the only Asian. The teasing never stopped because I was a rare sight and misunderstood. When I was younger, simple words could destroy me, however, the more mature I became and the more often I encountered the teasing, the more I became immune to it. I started to stand up for myself and eventually, …show more content…
College isn’t just a place to party and take exams. It's a place where an individual can grow, take risks, learn from failures, and unlock opportunities. However, I will not have this opportunity with my current situation. Due to the fact that my mother’s gross adjusted income exceeds $70,000, FAFSA and colleges believe that I am able to pay for $21,000 of the tuition and the rest of the fees and expected costs without help. What they fail to realize is that my mother is simply living off of social security benefits and pension since she retired two years ago. Just this past year, she accepted a part-time job offer since her medical fees, taxes, and bills started to overwhelm her. Therefore, scholarships like this are my biggest hope since they do not require me to pay back any of the money and will not put me in debt after college. The amount of money, if I happen to receive this scholarship, it will go towards funding my college expenses like tuition, housing, or board; and relieve me of some of the anxiety I have about my future. Without a college degree, my goal will be never be

Discuss an experience that sparked your interest in this field. I was a young freshman, wandering the halls of Cambridge High School attempting to find my classes without being late. During my freshman year, I was enrolled in a fascinating science class; biology. I became amazed at everything that I learned about and how every body system was so intricate in its functioning. I also loved how different levels of organization affect upper levels of the body system.…

My country has a storage of several things such as the health care system, stable hospitals with experienced doctors and nurses, new technologies, and etc. In Africa, there are not enough medical equipment or modern technology to save lives. Hospitals are alienated by people who need them the most, and if people manage to go to the hospital, they do not have the money to pay the hospital bills. In addition, sometimes they have serious diseases that doctors cannot find a cure for. Ultimately, many people lose their lives every day to diseases that are not yet known, for instance, Ebola disease outrage.…

Loxbey Montalvan I have spent my past four year attending Cutler Bay Senior High School, being that I am part of the first graduating class I have contributed enormously to my school. Over my four year all my honors and accolades have accumulated greatly. Academically I have done fairly well in the extremely challenging school I am enrolled in that does not offer any classes below an honors level. I have also greatly excelled in the sports my school has to offer, sports such as Cross Country and Water Polo, achieving captain for both teams and placing for best Cross Country runner at my school.…

Growing up in a low-income and rural Mexican-field working community in central Washington State, I
had always been on the receiving end of community outreach endeavors. Whether it was the local community college athletes, high school coaches and athletes from around the state, or teachers, I had grown up always on the receiving end of outreach and engagement. Sure, there were times throughout high school and college where I was asked to go talk to younger students or children at the local YMCA or community schools but never was it something that I felt committed to or overly passionate about. As I graduated college and reflected back on my life, I began to realize just how fortunate I was to have the people and resources in my life to assist in getting to the point of being a college graduate. This was something that is not commonplace in my community and is unheard of in my first-generation Mexican-American family.…

As an American-Born-Chinese living in the United States, I have experienced the best, and worst, of two worlds. Growing up, I struggled with finding my identity alongside my peers. While on the outside I have the standard appearance that labels me as “Asian”, this alone has singled me out from the predominantly caucasian student body at school. People have stamped me with the word, “nerd,” without me even opening my mouth to speak, and classified me as being “mathematically intelligent” without taking into account my efforts I placed into the class outside of school. But throughout my life, I have learned to acknowledge my heritage, as I realized the discrepancies between people is just another indicator of our individual uniqueness.…

The most definitive aspect of me as an intellectual explorer is that I am extremely optimistic and imaginative. In others, I’ve seen how a negative outlook in education can make people deny the potential for amazing things to happen, or worse yet; deny their own potential to accomplish extraordinary feats. So, I strive see the amazing possibilities in everything, and tackle every situation with an attitude of “I can and will” rather than “I cannot”. Even when struggling with difficult concepts, I remain positive and aim to find inventive methods to help me better understand. Becoming hands on with physical representations or tools is my most preferred method, because it’s the manner in which I taught myself to learn.…

When I started my first job as a profesional newspaper reporter (This job also served as an internship during my junior year in college — I just didn’t leave for about 6 years.) , I quickly realized that all my experience, and all my years of journalism education had not been enough to help me write stories about drug busts, fatal car accidents and tornadoes. All the theoretical work I’d done, and all of the nifty little scholastic and collegiate stories I had done, did not prepare me for real world writing. At that point, I had to find a solution quickly. After all, I had a dedline to meat, and it was only a few hours away.…

High school for me is very different then the college life that I have experienced so far. In high school there is so much judgement by the things you wear, who you talk to, and the things you do. But in college no one really cares there isn’t time to judge people it doesn’t matter to them. High school could be super brutal to some people because they don’t fit in they aren’t the typical student and others make sure that they know it. I feel that in college there is so many different types of people that everyone fits in there is a group or something for everyone to be a part of.…

My passion to know how governments make decisions have made me realized that my career goal is to be involved in these policy decisions but my current knowledge is not ready for it. UofT’s Department of Economics is known to be one of the bests in the world with reputable faculty members and abundant resources for academic research. As a result, I believe that UofT can further my understanding of the real world economy and provide a solid academic base for a future career in shaping economic…
