My Family: A Cultural Analysis

Improved Essays
It seems like we spend so much time learning about other cultures that we often don’t take a step back to reflect upon our own culture and appreciate it. Culture is defined as the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular people or society (oxforddictionaries.com). America is one of the most diverse countries in the world when it comes to culture. As we all learned in history class at some point, the “American Dream” brought in a large number of people from around the world. Along with those people came their cultures. These cultures remained prevalent for generations to come. In my case, I am the product of Caucasian and Hispanic parents. So like many others in this country, I have a mixed background of cultures. My father is Caucasian …show more content…
As I stated earlier, family is extremely important to my mother and that has passed to myself as well, “The Hispanic family is a close-knit group and the most important social unit. The family unit usually extends beyond the nuclear family” (augusta.edu). I can personally vouch for this statement. I was very close to my mother’s side of the family, aunts, uncles, cousins it didn’t matter we were all close. Religion is a large part of my culture and my mother’s as well, “Religion plays a significant role in day-to-day life. More than 90 percent of the Spanish-speaking world is Roman Catholic” (augusta.edu). “St. Augustine, Florida, and Sante Fe, New Mexico were Hispanic cities founded before Plymouth, Massachusetts”, from where I was born, Sante Fe is about 3 hours away and a very interesting city to visit (augusta.edu). It doesn’t take a historian to tell that some of the old Spanish cities have been in America long before the “American Dream” was even thought of. Something I didn’t mention earlier is that I am related to the first European explorer to set foot in Kansas. Francisco Vázquez de Coronado was a Spanish Conquistador around the 1500’s, who after exploring, married and spent the rest of his years in Mexico City, Mexico (biography.com). My mother was working on our family tree and happened to come across his name. He is my 16th great grandfather. He is how my mother’s side of the family came over from

It’s fascinating how people have been able to make so many different definitions for the word culture; a word that was thought to have one singular definition. People of all cultures are unique not just in their methods and ways of life, but also in their definitions of culture. One person can describe culture as something that can bring family and a community together, but another person may define it as the exact opposite; something that tears people apart and in turn will rip apart a community. Neither of them are wrong or right however, because culture is something that is tangible. Culture is something that changes with time instead of against it.…

Latino identity is a reflection of one’s culture, with religion being a significant aspect. More often than not, religion and Latino family relationships are interconnected. Latino families, especially parents and grandparents, are fervent in their religious beliefs. Latinos will often instill Catholicism/Christianity as their main religion and teach their children to have pride in their culture. Religion can be a delicate system to handle, as it can commonly become a source of loving devotion to families or the source of breaking families apart.…

A strong emphasis is placed on family as the major source of one’s identity and protection against the hardships of life. This sense of family belonging is intense and limited to family and close friends. People who are not family or close friends are often slow to be given trust, so it is important for Latino individuals to sustain those strong relationships with family and friends as a means to receive support when needed. The family model is an extended one; grandparents, aunts, cousins, and even people who are not biologically related may be considered…
