This is a 90 minute documentary produced by BBC on 7 August 2005 in the United Kingdom, written and directed by Paul Wilmshurst. It tells the story of the crew who flew the mission of Hiroshima and dropped the bomb, and focuses on the story of the people of Hiroshima who were the first ever victims of the nuclear retract. This movie can be also a drama or history one, as it touches emotions at specific points regarding the after-effects of the nuclear explosion. In addition, background music keeps changing (when it necessary) from one situation to another, especially while viewing the bomb's descend to the ground, and while telling stories by Japanese survivors after the attack. Furthermore, the use of match cuts establishes a well-developed…
Courage Nelson Mandela once stated that, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it”. In Ernst Gaines’ novel, “A Lesson Before Dying”, the most important lesson to learn before dying is courage. The novel shows this through the characters Tante Lou, Miss. Emma, and Jefferson. First of all, Tante Lou shows courage by being with Miss. Emma, working hard to get Grant through university, and she believes God will help everything.…
The American Dream means that with hard work and a little luck we can be anything we wanted to. Amy Tan, the author of “Two Kinds”, seems to say that although Jing-Mei’s mom can be bossy, she probably does this to help her daughter succeed. In this short story, “Two Kinds”, the main character, Jing-Mei Woo, also known as June, is forced by her mother, Mrs. Woo on learning how to play the piano and be the ultimate best. Mrs.Woo doesn’t really give Jing-Mei a choice, she wants to be able to brag about her daughter's “natural pride”. However, this makes Jing-Mei wants to shut down her mom’s dream of having the perfect daughter since she’s not really good at playing the piano.…
In 1821, Boston English High School opened it’s doors and became the first public high school ever. When it first opened it had an enrollment of 101 boys and no female students. It was placed on the corner of Derne Street and Temple Street, in Boston Massachusetts. It was a school opened for boys who did not plan to attend Harvard or could not afford it. I think that this school opening played a key role in educational history because public schools today give all kinds of students the opportunity to learn just as this one did.…
Throughout my time in English 101, my writing has undergone drastic improvements. The first writing assignment I chose to revise was Project 1, the Advertisement Analysis. My first draft of Project 1 had no clear thesis and no specific claim, ideally, an easy problem to solve. However, this was a common issue in my writing in most of my projects this semester, so it only made sense to tackle this project and revise it first. To begin revising Project 1, I first established my thesis statement which was that: the “Best Buds” advertisement was effective because of the incorporated rhetorical strategies and the overall theme of loyalty.…
My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. Being part of such a small community while heightening my sense of being has also made me more appreciative and understanding of other cultures & groups. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. My community has also enabled me to be a better communicator- as often times questions are asked regarding my ethnicity and religion where I can act as a spokesperson for the…
How can belonging and participating within a diverse community aid in the development of your academic, social and career goals? I usually enjoy starting my papers of with my name Taylor Andrews, what I’m entering for, the battle royal for everything, and my level a EKU JR, and arrogantly but rightly deserves it. Then I would give a generic merriam-webster dictionary for diversity; the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc, and then give my view. You may not agree but still feel as if EKU has a large way to go compared to Rutgers University in NJ with a diversity. Diversity plus Eastern Kentucky University is supposed to equal melting pot, but I have not seen this diverse world clearly.…
My high school community is unique and incredible in that it is inclusive. It was the best decision of my life to attend Xaverian Brothers High school, despite what failures I encountered. Entering high school my grandmother had just passed away and my family was in a large feud; I was lost and had no confidence. The community my high school established allowed me to find my niche and gain confidence. I discovered in high school that I am a service oriented and extremely driven student.…
Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…
My school offered opportunities for the students to get ahead and build lasting connections with professionals. The classroom sizes were fairly small so teachers were able to memorize student’s names and familiarize themselves with each individual. Due to the equal resource disbursement I was able to thrive in my schooling environment. Building a robust relationship with my science teacher was able to earn me an internship with a dentist that was her friend and exhort me to mobilize upwards in society. From interning for the dentist it opened doors to more internships and opportunities that I was able to access and turn into social capital.…
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 1010 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. When I received my first essay back with the feedback and the grade, I realized that I was not a really good writer.…
It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. Despite various minor challenges this semester I believe that I have put in the hard work that it takes and I have achieved the course goals and will complete this class feeling fulfilled and accomplished.…
Classroom Communities On the surface classrooms are intended as learning environments, although they are way more than that, a school is also a community of students. Communities are important, because they could affect how students are learning. A particular community is defined by student’s interactions, interactions between staff and students, and the goal of the institution. The men of The Citadel, a military school in the south, and the social hierarchy that exists there are great examples of community in education.…
On January the third, as we began our American Literature class, our professor put the whole class into groups. Everyone was assigned to write an essay about their group’s hobbies, accomplishments and goals. The people in my group are Klovis, James, and Spencer. The first person’s hobbies, accomplishments, and goals we are going to discuss is Klovis.…
There is a relationship between physical environment and human interactions. I live upstate New York and travel three day during the week to New York City. At the beginning when I start to travel I find a big difference between the two cities. The upstate New York is more quiet and people are more friendly. In New York City people don’t take time to see what is around them, even though they have everything.…
