My Ability To Read Analysis

“She will never be able to read.” My sister, Christine, is a child with a genetic disorder called, Prader Willi Syndrome, which causes her to be cognitively delayed, exceeding the average weight for a person of her age, with low muscle tone. Her list of symptoms convinced her first grade teacher that she was torpid and illiterate. It astonished me that in a matter of a month her teacher neglected my sister; therefore I took it upon myself to teach my sister how to read. Everyday after school, I would simulate a classroom desk on the dinner table. I would grab a book from the shelf in my room and prompt it next to a notebook with a pencil. During our learning sessions I would instruct my sister to repeat the sentence after myself. Whenever there was a word that she was not able to repeat, we would enunciate each part until my sister was able to convey the word back to me. An example of this is the word, “ King Triton.” My sister did not know the difference between the short i words and long i words. Through persistence and determination, I was able to make her comprehend the variance of pronunciation. To enhance her vocabulary, I would use my allowance money to buy my sister reading workbooks. She has surpassed picture books and now enjoys chapter books while being able to fully comprehend the events in the novel. Her passion of reading has sprouted her into a person who is can read at the same levels as her peers. Although she is proficient in reading our next challenge is mathematics. It may be a difficult task for her to grasp, but I know that if we set the same itinerary as before then she will be triumphant. All along my journey in helping Christine understand multiplication, I came to realize that she is a visual learner in math.
