Musical Theatre Research Paper

On October 9th, I had my first experience with the Texas State musical theatre program. On this night I went to see Rent, the show they were performing. Being my first college show, I had no idea what to expect. But when I was offered a chance to go see the show for free, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to see just how great the Texas State musical theatre program was and I have to say that I definitely was not disappointed. It all started when my roommate, who is in the musical theatre program, went to go see the dress rehearsal of the show. When she got back I could tell that she had gotten really emotional at the show. When I asked her how it went she told me that the show was amazing and that I needed to go see it. I then …show more content…
For a couple of weeks before this night, I had really been wondering what Rent was about. Before my roommate had mentioned it, I had never even heard of Rent before which she thought was crazy because apparently it was a huge success on Broadway and had been made into a movie. So because of my lack of knowledge on the play, I was really excited to be seeing it for the first time. Once the play started I told myself to calm down and truly enjoy and observe the show. While I was watching, some of the typical questions that people ask themselves during any performance or movie popped in my head like, “What is going on?”, “When is this supposed to take place?”, and “How old are these people supposed to be?”. One big question I had was “Where is the pit orchestra or is it recorded music?”. This was because I could not see where the pit was and it did not really sound like they were using a music track. However later that week, when I asked one of the people who was in the play about the orchestra, I was shocked to discover that the orchestra was under the …show more content…
The cast, from the main characters to the members of the ensemble, were all amazing at what they did whether it was singing or dancing or acting, they all did it very well. Even though I knew that we were not really in New York City and that it really was not 1989, the combination of the characters, the set, the costumes, and the overall atmosphere given off by show, gave the impression to the audience that we were actually witnessing all the struggles of living in New York City with AIDS or being a homosexual or struggling with a drug addiction. It also made me realize how much society has changed from 1989 to today. It made me see that how we as a society are more open to different sexual orientations than we were back in

All I can say is, the story had somewhat of a quicker pace and sometimes harder to follow and small details could easily be missed, and the lighting was a tiny bit distracting when it flashed across the stage quickly. The use of sound effects was used to signify different things that caught the attention of the viewers and really added a special touch to the play. The play showcased beautiful and stunning singing which made the play more authentic, combined with the elaborate dances numbers truly made the show breathtaking and…

Furthermore, the stage setup was utilized well. With the stage in the middle, they had three sides of audience seats that surrounded the stage. I thought this set up made the play more interactive and able to focus on the main character more closely. The lighting for this play was used effectively as well.…

After hanging up from talking to my mother, I decided to take her advice. If I have to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show for class that it would the best if I was to actually experience the show, this culture, this step into the past, instead of just watching the musical on my laptop and thinking this is the strangest musical in the world. I looked up if there was even any showings still of this musical, and lucky there was one this the Nuart Theater, of course the midnight showing. The price was only $11, a price I luckily could afford as a poor college student. I called up a few friends, family members, and my roommate…

The actors had a lot of energy that undoubtedly captured the viewer’s attention. Each actor had a certain characteristic that made him or her truly fascinating to watch. They were able to interact with each and every audience member. This left me, a viewer, who was in the middle of the room, feeling as though I was in the play. The plays story may have been their biggest obstacle, however.…

Overall, this show was fantastic. It had the element of audience interaction that not many plays really have and if they do, no theatre has it down like Pocket Sandwich. Before the show they have someone that greets you with a medium sized boat of popcorn that any newcomer would think to eat. They have more intentions for the popcorn than you’d generally expect, they actually want you to save it all and throw it at the cast members! Before the play began there was an actress that announced how we should properly throw popcorn at the cast members and what the general rules of thumb were for certain situations.…

My expectations walking towards the production for “Betty’s Diner” were not very high. I was not looking forward to seeing the play because I really dislike musicals. The singing after every six minutes bored me as a child watching movie musicals so why would I want to watch them now? As a kid I was unable to watch “High School Musical” and most other musical movies because the singing absolutely annoyed me whenever a character felt any type of emotion. All of my experiences of past musicals had clouded my mind making me not want watch the play.…

    Rent: Play Analysis

Profit and delight was masked for me in this play by confusing storylines, multiple actions at once, and the play having no impact on my life. Rent showed poor creators in New York City chancing their dreams while bonding with each other through their struggles. An underlying, but very prevalent issue that many of the characters had was AIDs, although the word was never spoken aloud in the musical. The reason for this, I believe, was to show that their disease does not define them but rather everything else about their lives. This theme was almost lost for me in the business of the musical.…

This is how show choir has impacted my life then, and still impacts me. In my 8th grade year I transferred to Sheridan from Gahanna. But in English, I met my best friend Emily Welch.…

I was shocked to discover how different the movie is from the play. It is the same story, however, a majority of the songs played at different times and multiple songs were added. Additionally, some aspect of the story were taken out—such as the race against Leo at Thunder Road—and some aspect were more prevalent—there was more character development for the T-Birds and Pink Ladies,…

The house was very full, which was a little bit discouraging compared to the typical turnout of Poudre plays. However, it was also exciting that so many parents, students, and community members were involved with theatre at Fort Collins High School and gave me hope for how things could be improved at Poudre. The responses to the play were appropriate and positive, and the performers received a deserved standing ovation at the end of the…
