Muscular Power In Touch Football

Touch football is a physically demanding sport requiring the extensive use of many systems of the body. It is important for an athlete to properly train and develop these energy systems to perform to their highest potential. I have constructed a training program in order to develop upon my two weakest areas, muscular power and the combination of speed and agility. The average to poor results I received during fitness testing reflected my performance in the vertical jump test, 40m sprint, and the Illinois agility test. "Muscular power is the ability to use strength quickly to produce an explosive effort" (Amezdroz, 2010, p.250) Speed and agility both rely on anaerobic energy, therefore both systems require the development of the Anaerobic energy system. Anaerobic power can be of two methods, the Creatine Phosphate system, "An anaerobic method of resynthesising ATP using creatine phosphate as fuel" (Amezdroz, 2010, p.207), and the Lactate system, which involves "resynthesising ATP using glucose as fuel" (Amezdroz, 2010, pg.209), also known as anaerobic glycolysis. This training program will effectively work to target these systems of the body in order to optimise touch performance.

Speed and agility are often used on the touch field, and a lack of these qualities will result in less ground cover during game play, and an inability to excel. Agility, “the ability to change position of the body quickly and precisely and still remain balance”, and speed, or anaerobic endurance, “the ability to put body parts into motion quickly and sustain high intensity efforts”, are closely related.     Following this, a fitness test was designed for agility in touch football. This test was effective as it had specific meaning it was specific to one sport which was touch football. This was done in many aspects of the drill, more notably the dump during the middle of the test as this is heavily used throughout a game of Touch.
