By exhaling normally into a spirometer before and after exercise, we were able measured the tidal volume. This allows us to measure if working out changes the amount of air being taken in by the lungs. The dependent variable is the tidal volume, and the independent variable is the amount of jumping jacks being completed by the subject. There were three levels of treatment: 30, 40, and 50 jumping jacks. To start out each trial we measured the subject’s tidal volume. As soon as the jumping jacks were done, the tidal volume was measured with the spirometer. After each set of exercise there was one minute of rest to allow the tidal volume to return to normal. These steps were repeated three times for each level of treatment. Controls included: standing up while taking measurements, starting the spirometer at 2,000 ml, and using the same subject for all
