Munch: The Scream

Munch – The scream
One of the best oeuvres ever created by humans, “The scream” is widely considered as an epitome of juxtaposition of its creator’s mastery in choosing colors and dexterity in conveying the painter’s emotional state. Although painted numerous times by the same author, every example of the painting holds some kind of genuine feeling, unique to that composition.
The picture can be theoretically spilt into two parts: the background and the face. The blazing scarlet sky, the blue placid sea and the seemingly infinite road merge in the horizon, creating an astonishing background for the dismal figure. The light bulb shaped face with its wide-open and creepy eyes conveys more of a feeling of uneasiness to the observer than of a fear.

Though a rather uncreative title, Coming out of Church lacks nothing in interest visually. The painting, done by Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta, was created some time before 1875 in Spain reveals the harsh class differences and cultural norms of the mid 1800’s while also revealing the artists own personal outlook on these phenomena. Madrazo cultivates a scene of gloomy metaphor in his use of rain, and a visual representation of his opnion on the class division through the use of gesture, costume, subject, juxtaposition and light. The end product is both a beautifully crafted piece of work, and a painting that reflects Madrazo’s critique on his belief in the dangers and ailments of class division. Location, location, location; not just important in real estate, it is also prevalent in the location of the scene in a painting.…

The traditional view of art has changed over time just as most things have. Naturally, the act of perception has differed opinions on what society considers as art. Dance, paintings, photography, drawings, music, literature, and sculpting, are what comes to mind when contemplating the aspects of art. The limitation to defining a word so opinionated leaves out room for self-expression. The traditional ideas of what is considered art should be broadened; granted, although not tangible, art can be seen through ambitions, emotions, and expression through appearances when not limited to the customary definition.…

With thunder crackling and rain pouring down, the first tick in the box of horror cliches is marked within seconds of playing Layers of Fear. That's not to say this psychedelic horror-adventure doesn't offer anything original. Starting out in a seemingly empty 19th-century mansion certainly sets an uncomfortable tone, and aided by the rambling narrative of an artist who has completely lost his mind - Layers of Fear is consistently unsettling. While you could be forgiven for thinking the concept of Layers of Fear has been done before, it would be wrong to assume that it's a carbon copy of P.T.…

Art is meant to capture the viewer’s attention and affect them on a deep level. Many times, it leads the audience to examine human beings at a rudimentary state. In Théodore Géricault’s painting, Raft of the Medusa, 1818-1819, Oil on canvas, the viewer does exactly that. In his painting, about 20 men are strewn on a makeshift raft from the remnants of their ship. Some are dead and some are franticly waving pieces of cloth in the air at a ship in the horizon.…

There’s a monster in my closet! What is fear? This abstract word is, by definition, “the unpleasant feeling of distress aroused by impending danger, pain, evil, etc” (The American heritage). The stimulus of fight or flight accompanies this; it causes our pupils to dilate to help us see, engulfs us with adrenaline to ready us for action and at the same time, paralyzes the muscles of the body rendering it vulnerable.…
