When we think of Shakespeare, “whimsical” and “goofy” aren’t typically the words that come to mind. Yet, when asked to describe their show in one word, the cast and crew of Aeneid Theatre Company’s Much Ado About Nothing found themselves breaking out into laughter.
“You find that there is a lot of comedy, but that’s not something you get when you first read it,” said Andrea Moore, who plays the Sexton. “This show does such a good job of bringing that [comedy] out.”
For those of you who are not Shakespeare enthusiasts, Much Ado About Nothing is a classical play filled with witty banter, raunchy humor, and is often considered Shakespeare’s most popular comedy. The play follows two couples: Beatrice and Benedict, who have a “play hard to get” approach to romance, and Hero and Claudio, who are caught in a seemingly perpetual honey-moon phase until fate and trickery tear them apart. The fast-paced comedy invites audiences to experience the excitement, the heartbreak, and the joys of falling in love.

It’s staged in the courtyard of USC’s Physical Education Department, making for an alternative and incredibly interactive experience. Audience members sit in chairs on opposite sides of the courtyard and face each other with the stage in between them. Most of the action occurs around a small, beautiful, aqua blue fountain that appears to have been broken for some time. The courtyard is filled with greenery and colorful lights, and the crew hangs white flags above each entrance. Looking up, you see the surrounding brick walls of the courtyard are covered in vines and decorated with windows and balconies made of a dark
