Mu Alpha Theta Personal Statement

Mu Alpha Theta and my chapter have been a platform for me to network with likeminded people who are as passionate as me about the discipline of mathematics. Connecting with peers and professors has allowed me to not only learn from but also contribute to a community dedicated to academic progress and mathematical achievement. Also, involvement in my chapter has availed me opportunities to take on leadership positions, like Chapter Secretary, Vice President, and President, each of which honed my leadership skills. Organizing chapter events and meetings, participating in a community service event on campus, attending mathematics competition training sessions, and helping with recruitment efforts are just a few highlights from my chapter involvement.
Even though mathematics captured my interest back in my high school years with its complexity and beauty, college classes and Mu Alpha Theta have only fed my desire to learn more. Discovering the countless applications of mathematics and how it is a fundamental language of all sciences amazed me and opened my eyes to the creativity that is possible through mathematics. Furthermore, discussing mathematical topics and problems with fellow Mu

These people were energetic about mathematics and never considered my academic interests odd. My chapter advisor and fellow members urged me to participated in the mathematics competition training sessions on campus which prepared students for the Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Competition. I did participate and then at the 2017 competition, I ended up ranking ninth overall in the state of New Jersey and tying for top female and my team ranked fifteenth. This achievement and others like taking Differential Equations in the first semester of my freshman year and participating in a special research project in my sophomore year have made me eager for future academic

Coming into UNC as a first-year student, I was lucky enough to have quite a few transfer credits from high school; many of which were in my intended field of study: mathematics. Looking to continue with a major in mathematics, I signed up for the next course in the intended major progression, MATH 381: Discrete Mathematics. This course serves as an introduction to mathematical logic, almost like a stepping stone towards higher mathematics. On my first day of my first year at Carolina, I walked into the classroom in Phillips to realize that I was the only first year in the course. The rest of them were sophomores or juniors, who were all quite familiar with the inner machinations of Carolina’s mathematics department.…

I am interested in membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., because of what Delta represents. To me Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. represents strong, educated black woman that are dedicated to improving their community. When I was a child I always said that I wanted to improve my community. As I grew up I saw how children from impoverished homes were not always exposed or given the opportunity to achieve a better life. Throughout time, mathematics has always had an influence on society and its ideals. However, the presence of mathematical application is especially present in Plato's The Republic, and especially its effect on mathematical education. Plato's ideas on mathematics education can give reason as to why math influences many other subjects and can encourage critical and abstract thinking in young students. This includes giving students the ability to think abstractly, apply math to all other subjects, and to be able to think critically and to reason with the numbers that surround the society we live in. Although one might argue that man can still be successful without math, the field of math is everywhere and is applicable to all career fields.…

Math, the subject that everyone seems to dislike and whenever we hear that word we just have to say“ugh, I can't stand that subject” or ask “why do we even need this subject?” Research shows that “almost one third of Americans would rather clean their bathroom than do a math problem” and “Raytheon Corporations asked 1,000 middle schoolers if they rather eat broccoli or do a math problem, the majority said broccoli.” Most people hate math but there are still people in the world who hold a passion for Math. These mathematicians look for ways to understand the world of numbers and these people are a very important contribution for their generation.…

Experiencing computer science and mathematics at BC has inspired me and sparked a passion. I take so much pride in my study of Math and Computer Science because I can see the need and potential for computer scientists, mathematicians, and engineers in society; they are essential. Learning about ancient mathematics teachings that stretch back as far as the Stone Age and how the evolution of mathematics has transpired to its current modern state. Without understanding the development of mathematical thought, it can come off challenging to value modern mathematics in the modern-day and highly specialized state. Even with that being said I promised myself that I’d be more receptive and attentive in this course and in all my other courses so no matter what I’m going to stick to that by advancing both my strengths and weaknesses. At first, I wasn’t going to take math until the last semester of my senior year but so far, I’m glad that I didn’t because the math we’ve been working on has really expanded my knowledge more than I expected and allowed me to refresh myself on some of the old problems I learned and worked on in high school. This leaves me with both curiosity and uncertainty of what to expect for the rest of the upcoming semester because it can go both ways moving forward which can be a little threatening but I feel that I am ready for…

“Mathematics” is an open concept with many possible meanings. In Philosophical Investigations, Ludwig Wittgenstein(1992) talks about the variety of language games, and “mathematics” may operate in a huge number of such games. While mathematics as a research field includes a vast domain of unsolved issues and conceptions in development. Well-intended definitions, as suggested by classic positions within the philosophy of mathematics – where logicism describes mathematics as a further development of logic; formalism describes it as a formal game governed by explicitly stated rules; and intuitionism describes mathematics as a particular mental process – might simply be concealing the fact that there are no unifying characteristics of mathematics to be identified.…

Many of us are familiar with the term “Math Anxiety” because we often hear it among students that fear the subject Mathematics. The formal definition of math anxiety as defined by Tobias (1993) is a feeling of nervousness or worriedness that creates tension, therefore preventing someone, usually a student in a college-community setting, to manipulate numbers and solve mathematical problems without panic, paralysis, and mental disorganization. Math anxiety is acknowledged by psychologists around the globe because of a large number of students that are experiencing it. Most students lose their nerves when they hear the word “Math” maybe because Math is considered as one of the hardest and one of the most important subject throughout one’s academic…
