I have chosen to enter the profession of social work because I want to help people who are suffering from mental illness and who are underserviced when it comes to getting help for mental illnesses. By working with a distressed person to become better, not only will I be able to enhance their life, but also the community will transform into a more positive place. I view transformation as a ripple effect, where changing the situation for one person eventually causes a change in the majority. This is especially true when it comes to mental illness and the stigma that surrounds it. I have been highly involved in mental health work on my college campus since my sophomore year.…

It disturbs me to see such unnecessary violence at the hands of the people we are supposed to trust to protect and serve us. I do not suffer from anxiety very often, but this movie made me very anxious. Seeing such brutality and people begging for their lives for no obvious reason is beyond something I can understand. Discrimination and racism, have always been hard for me to comprehend because I grew up in a very diverse neighborhood in Madison.…

Before entering ATC’s Social Work Assistance Program I felt disconnected from my previous career and very unsure of what I wanted to do with my future. I realized early on that I am driven by the need to help others and facilitate positive change around me. Yet, I felt those needs unfulfilled in my previous profession. Discovering social work, regardless of where it may lead me, peaked my interests in such a way that no other field really has. I knew I found something special during the first class because of Mrs. Watts’ ability to break down barriers and get her students to open up about their insecurities and really question why they were here.…

Recently, I had a learning experience from my internship that will help me even more in my pursuit in the field of social work. The day that this event occurred it helped me be able to be the teacher rather than the student to my intern advisors. Being that Voyage house is a support program for clients, we help to provide them with the necessities of food and household items from those that have no income. Therefore, we take them to Walmart and give them a budget that they are able to work with since they only need to provide resources just for them to living off. This was on a Friday where I had to miss group because I had something to do at school that morning; therefore, I just met my intern advisor later that day at Walmart.…

My internship is at UC Davis Medical Center in the Clinical Social Services Department. This semester, the interns are doing rounds in the hospital. What that means is that each week, I am in a different unit of the hospital shadowing a Social Worker and taking cases if I feel comfortable. With that being said, I have not had the opportunity to have a client for a long period of time. Next semester, I will have to chose one or two units that I want to work in and that is where I will have my own caseload for the rest of the year.…
