Mrs Dubose Is Brave In To Kill A Mockingbird

Mrs.Dubose In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the readers will learn about the character Mrs.Dubose’s. Throughout chapter 11 Mrs.Dubose calls Jem and Scout’s dad, Atticus a “N****r-lover” and in turn Jem rips up her Camellia flower garden because he loses his temper. After Mrs.Dubose finds her garden ripped up she tells Atticus and They both decide to make Jem read to her over the next month plus an extra week. Chapter 11 reveals the character Mr.Dubose is critical and brave. In chapter 11 Mrs.Dubose is seen as brave by the readers and by Atticus. Mrs.Dubose does not have a lot of respect for Atticus and she is very critical of the work that he does, and she tells Jem and Scout this. “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one lawing in the courthouse lawing for N-words”(Lee 135). This quote shows the reader that Mrs.Dubose does not like the work Atticus does and she does not appreciate black people. This also shows how little she respects the lives of black people because she calls them such a derogatory word. …show more content…
The reader sees Mrs.Dubose is brave without having a gun in her hand because courage can come from within and does not have to be in the form of a weapon on a battlefield. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand”(Lee 149). This quote shows how Mrs.Dubose was a positive role model and even in her last stages of life she was able to give a positive example to Jem and Scout.
