Mr Johnson Biological Investigation

Improved Essays
Karl Landsteiner identified the ABO blood group in 1901. The ABO blood group includes four types of blood (A, B, AB, and O). The differences in blood types are due to the presence or absence of certain types of antigens and antibodies. Antigens are molecules that are located on the surface of the red blood cells (RBCs), and antibodies are molecules that are located in the blood plasma. Individuals have different types and combinations of these molecules. The goal of this investigation is to use what we know about the inheritance of ABO blood types to determine if Mr. Johnson can be excluded as the father of any of Mrs. Johnson’s children. The guiding question of this investigation is, Are all of Mr. Johnson’s children his biological offspring? …show more content…
Johnson’s children are his biological offspring or not. Considering that Ms.Johnson had an affair during her eight years of being married to Mr. Johnson. Mr. and Ms. Johnson had three children during their eight year married. Once Mr.Johnson found out about the affair, he wanted to find out if all of the children were his or not. To figure out which children belong to Mr.Johnson and which children belonged to Mr. Wilson blood samples were taken from each person. For the lab, individually, the procedure was to first clean work space, get safety equipment , Gather and Organize supplies. Once that part is complete, add two drops of blood sample A to well A and to well B on a blood-typing slide. Then add two drops of the correct antiserum to both samples. Then stir each sample for 10 sec with a clean toothpick. After 10 seconds check blood for clotting. Then record the data. And input the data into a table. Clean the wells before next use. Then repeat steps 1 through 10 for Mr.Johnson, Mrs.Johnson, Mr.Wilson, and the three kids. Below shows Table A, it explains the blood type. Also it shows if they clotted or did not clot after or during the

If a person is an O then he/she has antibodies against both A and B. Blood typing is used for identification in forensics, and paternity tests. Blood typing is also used to determine the safety of blood transfusions; type A blood cannot accept type B blood because person A’s blood contain antibodies against antigen -B. Another factor of blood is the Rh factor, a protein on red blood cells, and people can either be Rh-positive or…

In the speech titled 'Family Medical Histories: A Proven Lifesaver' the author, Steven Harris, puts forward that the medical profession does not pay enough attention to the patient's family medical histories. He argues this lack of attention is the culprit in the misdiagnosis of hundreds of patients as most are hereditary diseases. Much truth lies in the argument posed by Harris because there have been genetic links found between generations of carriers of diseases. However, Harris overlooks other scenarios for the contraction of the diseases mentioned in the article.…

Potentially a fatal transfusion reaction can occur if a unit of blood containing an ABO antigen to which the blood recipient has an antibody is transfused to the recipient. Therefore, to avoid all rational problems an individual must obtain a blood type before any blood transfusions to not experience a dangerous immune response. In 1901 Karl…
