The concert I attended was “Khaner Plays Mozart” performed by The Philadelphia Orchestra. This performance took place at The Kimmel Center for the Performing arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at 2 in the afternoon on March 18, 2016. Verizon Hall, which is located in The Kimmel Center, has seating for 2,500 people. I do not know how many people were in attendance, but not every seat was filled in Verizon Hall. Majority of the audience was elderly people with a few younger adults and several students were present as well. The two classical music pieces I heard were Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major, K. 313 and Haydn’s Symphony No. 83 in G minor. The first two pieces were performed by J.S. Bach and C.P.E. Bach. 83 in G minor entitled “The Hen.” A symphony usually contains four movements. Haydn wrote over 100 symphonies throughout his lifetime that were light hearted and full of energy. Symphony No. 83 was one of the six Paris symphonies that Haydn wrote. This symphony is given the title “The Hen,” but it was not given by Haydn. The symphony is written in G minor, which is not typical of Haydn, majority of Haydn’s symphonies were written in major keys and major tonalities. The first movement was Allegro Spiritoso. As the dynamic level went up, so did the tempo go up. The first theme was slow and sounded more sad and depressing compared to the second theme that was more lively and was written in G major. The second movement was andante. The second movement was slow and lyrical as we would have supposed for a typical Haydn symphony. The third movement was Menuet: Allegretto. The expected minuet and trio followed the graceful and relaxing second movement. There was a clear distinction between the mibuet and trio in this piece. The tempo varied throughout this movement from a walking speed to a fast speed. The fourth movement was Vivace. The final movement was very fast and lively and ended the symphony in a very cheerful and happy

Symphony is a multi-movement instrumental work for an orchestra originating from the Italian Sinfonia, which was an instrumental prelude to large-scale vocal works such as opera and oratorio. Sinfonia comprises of 3 movements written at the tempo sequence of fast- slow fast. According to Dr. Nolan Gasser, the new trend of adopting opera sinfonia for concert use emerged in the 1720s and 30s and soon, composers such as Giovanni Battista Sammartini and Johann Stamitz began composing symphonies as an independent work. Three symphonies from Johann Stamitz, Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven will be used in this paper to compare four elements –movement structure, length of the first movement, instrumentation and the compositional techniques used…

Two violins, one viola, and a cello played Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet, Op. 76, No.3 (Emperor), II in quadruple meter and in the form of one homophonic theme with four polyphonic variations. The theme is introduced by the entire quartet in an conjunct melody that has three unique phrases. The first phrase, “A”, is the first to be introduced and repeated a second time, “A-A”. Phrase “A” moves smoothly from mid to high in ascending and descending conjunct intervals and is repeated.…

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is one of the most well-known symphonies ever written. The first movement is “fast with vigor”. The introduction is somewhat deceiving because it does not feel fast. The smoothness of it allows the listener to sit back and forget how quickly the music is progressing. It is not until the first half cadence from V/V to V that the listener feels how dynamic the movement is.…

The second movement, compared to the first, was much softer and slower in tempo. The movement begins as monophonic and then becomes homophonic as more instruments become involved. The changes in dynamics were a lot sudden in the second movement, there would be a crescendo and rapidly go down to a diminuendo. The final movement was faster in tempo, compared to the two beginning movements. The last movement mostly involved a lot of repetition, while the other movements had more of a variation.…

Symphony No. 9 contains four movements. The first movement is in sonata allegro form. Therefore, it contains the sections: exposition, a bridge, development, recapitulation, and coda. Movement I begins with the lower string section playing sweetly and smoothly, possibly representing calm seas while sailing to the new world. The tempo and dynamic soon changes to a much faster and louder sound, which is the introduction of teme I, which may represent the harsh seas encountered while sailing to the shores of the new world.…

At this concert, the best music that I like is the Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz which is the Op. 14, Reveries, Passions: Largo; Allegro agitato e appassionato assai (lively, agitated, and impassioned) which is movement no. 1. And also on this concert they played movement no. 2, A Ball:Valse, Allegro non troppo. It is Program symphony with five movements.…

It was not fast but it was vivace and adagio. From the way i heard it, i will say that it represents a major key , which puts an individual in a happy and relaxed mood. The piece reminds me of like sometime in the spring with birds chirping and flowers blooming. In this piece, is more likely to be played at a dance ball.…

Caprice sur les grands jeux composed by Louis-Nicholas Clerambault. I really enjoyed this performance because of the powerful intensity of the notes. The dynamics would change frequently from solft to loud music. Since it was a Recital, meaning a solo concert with or without an accompaniment, but in this case Guenette was playing the organ, I cannot comment if he was playing in tune or not since he was to only performer on stage and I was not familiar with the piece therefore, I would not have known if he was playing in tune.…

Johannes Brahms composed his Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73, in 1877, while visiting a rural town in Austria. This composition is typical of Brahms’ works in that it is a mixture of classical form and more modern ideas. The first movement, Allegro non troppo, is in sonata-allegro form and in triple simple meter, this movement is filled with contradictions in mood and contrasting sections. The numerous contrasts between the different sections make the transitional material especially important in this movement.…

After this movement, all the instruments began playing a strong fortissimo beat, which gradually increased the tension, leading up to a muted trumpet solo. The strings dominated the remainder of the movement, with a strong legato melody passed from the ’cellos to the violins, and, finally, to the basses. The third movement could be classified by the increasing significance of the drums, who moved the orchestra along in a clear duple meter. Their presence became less important after a ritardando, which brought back the light melody to the woodwinds.…

Standardized testing has been used in the United States since the mid- 1800s. However, it became the most common way of testing student, school, and teacher performance with the start of the No Child Left Behind Act which was put into place in 2002. There has been much controversy regarding this act and the heightened importance it places on these assessments. Through much research, many specialists have found that standardized testing isn’t effective, though many proponents still exist. The purpose of this paper is to lay out the facts of the issue the educational field is facing to prove that standardized testing is not the best way to measure student achievement because it limits curriculum, is not comparable to real life situations, and…

The Symphony No 5 in C minor is noted to have four typical movements in it. In most symphonies as this was the first and second movement is seen to a complete stop the third movement moves on without any form of stop to the fourth. This is a transition achieved with the use of string sections, flutes, oboes and clarinets. Only in the last movement are the Piccolo, the trombstones and the contrabassoons are used. In the first movement there is a four note motive.…

I learned that there are different movements in pieces. For the first half of the concert I kept thinking the piece was over and was wondering why the conductor wasn’t stepping away and why no one was clapping. It turns out that the orchestra was actually just transitioning into the next movement of the piece. The first piece, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concert, mvt 3 had two separate movements.…
