Mt. Vesuvius erupted on August 24th through the 25th, 79 AD and destroyed the Roman city. The people the lived in Pompeii did not know that it was an active volcano. Within 25 hours, the entire city and all of it's people were destroyed. The volcano erupted lots of ash, lava, fumes and stones into the sky. These things were thrown up to twenty miles in the air at one and a half million tons per second. One hundred thousand times the thermal energy released by the Hiroshima bombing came out of the Mt. Vesuvius volcano. About thirteen thousand people died because of the hydrothermal pyroclastic flows coming out of the volcano. Most of the people died from suffocating on the ash in the air. He was in a city called Misenum that was about eighteen miles away. He could feel the earthquakes from the volcano all the way in his city. Pliny the Younger had written about what he had seen in a letter. He described the ocean as being pulled out to sea. This means that there were probably tsunamis caused by the volcanic eruption and following earthquakes. He described the sounds and sights of the day.
