Most Dangerous Game Consequences

"The Most Dangerous Game," by Richard Connell, demonstrates that actions can have

major consequences, as shown through the conflict, setting, and characters of the story.

The conflict of this story focuses on Rainsford's struggle to survive being hunted by the

skilled huntsman, General Zaroff. This is shown numerous times throughout the story. Such as

when "The dead tree, delicately adjusted to rest on the cut living one, crashed down and struck

the general a glancing blow as it fell (77)." Zaroff is essentially getting wounded by a trap

created by Rainsford, in his attempt to hunt him down. Or when Zaroff's best hunting hound

gets killed in a trap set by Rainsford in an attempt to defend himself from Zaroff. The

In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the main character, Rainsford displays clear signs of being a man of logic. Even at the beginning of the story, the protagonist acts in a calm and composed manner, distinctly showing how rational he is. When Rainsford tumbles off the yacht, he becomes stranded at sea, however, knowing there was a chance someone on the boat might hear him, he “wrestled himself out of his clothes and shouted with all his power” (15). Rainsford knew that it was pointless to attempt to catch up with the yacht, and that it would only waste what little strength he had left. It was in his best interest to try to yell out with the slim chance of someone hearing him rather than to waste his energy swimming.…

The reader first feels worried when the general describes the ‘new animals’ he hunts. After Zaroff reveals his new animal to be a human, Rainsford immediately argues that what Zaroff is doing is cold-blooded murder. The general says, “‘It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason… I refuse to believe that so modern and civilized a young man as you seem to be harbors romantic ideas about the value of human life.’” (9-10). Zaroff’s insanity makes the reader wonder what will happen to Rainsford, therefore conveying a feeling of apprehension to the audience.…

Another example of plot similarities, is that Rainsford sets the same traps in both versions of The Most Dangerous Game. In both interpretations of the story, when Rainsford is challenged to the hunting game by Zaroff, he sets a sapling trap, a hole trap, and a sand trap. Despite these and many more similarities, there are also notable differences in the two storylines. One example of a great difference is that there is a time difference in the versions of the story. In the book, Rainsford is challenged to survive for three days while being hunted by Zaroff.…

This hints that something unusual is being hunted here, which we later find out are humans. When Rainsford and Zaroff are speaking Zaroff says “Ivan is a simple man, but, I’m afraid, like all his race, is a bit of a savage”, he then smiles showing his very evil looking and teeth and revels he too is of Ivan’s race. This tells us that Zaroff is not a man with good intentions and makes us wonder what devious plan he has in store for Rainsford. The next example of foreshadowing really revels what Zaroff does on this island of his. When Rainsford states that he thinks the cape buffalo is the most dangerous of all big game.…
