Important holidays people get a day off, the day is religious and celebrated as a national holiday. Some Islamic holidays are Ashura, it is a day of fasting. Another holiday is al-Mawlid al-Nabawi, the celebration of Muhammad the prophet’s birth. Mousses or religious festivals are held throughout the year. The dates for religious holidays are changed every year because it is determined by lunar calendars. Every year Muslims take part in Ramadan, which is a holy month of fasting and prayer. There is no eating, drinking, or smoking from sunrise to sunset. It is considered a time to “renew one's faith.” It is celebrated with special foods and practices. They wake up before sunrise to eat a light breakfast, some people will pray. Children, pregnant women, travelers, foreign visitors, and sock people are excused from the fasting, though they try to participate some parts of the day. School days are shortened, work hours are changed to make up for the missing lunch and it gives people a chance to rest at home. Sometimes during the day young men will start a daytime soccer game to show off their agility even when they are fasting. The fasting ends every day at sundown, fasting is broken by eating dates and drinking water or milk, it is then followed by a traditional soup called harira.
