By the using plural form and present tense, this quote shows that society is built to destroy sanity. Offred is in, and out of dreaming and confused where she is at. She goes through mental checks in her head and then thinks, “These are the tests, and I am sane” (Atwood 109). These is plural, which means there are a number of tests. The mid-eighteenth century was a confusing and revolutionary time period for the United States.1 After the Civil War the U.S. underwent a major paradigm shift in the racial hierarchy of the American people, with the emancipation and naturalization of former slaves, through the passage of the 13th and 14th Amendment, arrival of new immigrants, and changing demographic. President Ulysses S. Grant called for a celebration of Thanksgiving to give thanks for the reunification of the Union. Using symbols and labeling, Nast depicts a picturesque, utopian American society united by their common humanity, despite their perceived differences.2 Keller employs negative racial stereotypes and racialized portrayals of non Protestant-Anglo communities to…

The 1920s saw the making of the american cuisine which was more homogenous than ever before. Before WWI there was no distinctive american cuisine but after the war we got electric refrigerators and gas stoves which greatly assisted with the american cuisine that we know today. And the use of the cookbooks were widely used in the time period of the 1920s for the help of memorizing recipes so they wouldn’t have to use the book every time they cooked. I’ve never used a cookbook but i try as hard as i can to remember the recipes in order to make what i’m aiming for. The use of the current materials at the time were very rare in the normal household for they were expensive more than the normal person can afford.…

I believe that our Thanksgiving menu is different because we have more access to different foods. In 1621, they didn't have the same access that we do now because technology has grown. History: Squeaky Clean and Ignorant At the age of seven I was taught the story of the first Thanksgiving. My class and I were told of the wonders the Pilgrims explored and how kind and peaceful their meeting with the Native Americans was. We dressed up in handmade frocks and pinafores or vests and feathers as we had a feast and played games. We never once considered the accuracy of the history we were taught, nor the implications of the age old legend of the first Thanksgiving. Nor did I, until my junior year of high school, when my history teacher assigned us an assignment on the smallpox pandemic of the Patuxets tribe.…
