Mock Trial Reflection
In preparation for doing the mock trial, our group really tried to understand both what was happening in the minds of the lawyers and the witnesses. Those who were trying to be prosecutors had a bit of a harder time trying to be like a real lawyer. Even being a witness, like myself, it was a somewhat difficult feat. This task was even harder considering I was supposed to play a psychologist, Dr. Alex Richards in the Chris Archer trial. You have to know how to answer the questions the lawyer asks you as the person you are representing. It would have been quite a difficult task- at least for me.
It was fun to get together with the group and talk about our project. We got to see the other side of most crime shows and really

Richards was interesting because personally I am really interested in the more scientific and even psychological aspects of why people do what they do. It was interesting to learn that there are counselors that are specifically for students in Greek life. I was aware that hazing was a big problem for sororities and fraternities, but the fact that there has to be a specialist for this specific problem shows just how rampant and big of a problem it really is. She even knew from personal experience the hardships of being part of a sorority as she was a pledged Gamma herself. She understood that loyalty is everything to both sororities and fraternities, so any problem that happens within them, they try to keep it to themselves in order to keep brotherhood or sisterhood. She also added an important part of how Milan died was due to a large consumption of alcohol and probably intimidation, a common tactic for sorority and fraternity hazing.
During the trial, I can imagine how back and forth the arguments would have been. Clearly by having one of his fellow fraternity brother testify, you would have probably heard about how Chris Archer was a good person incapable of murder and then the opposite characterization from other witnesses like Milan’s best friend. I think that the trial for the most part could have easily have been ‘he said vs. she said’, but then you have to add in the factors of hazing and alcohol and then the possibility of would have definitely increased. My part would have included tangible evidence that is important to any court

The theatre has a specific purpose of conveying a narrative. A lawyer’s goal in any trial is to tell a specific narrative to the jury. There are two competing narratives in the courtroom, so it is a lawyers ethical duty to the client to try and expand the storyline as to convince the jury of the most probable account. The actors found in a theatre can be paralleled to the members of a court.…

The Smart Trial Debate Judge Glassford sits at the head of the classroom as students take each other on in a debate that questions the innocence or guilt of Pamela Smart in the conspiracy to murder her husband Gregory Smart. The students in the English 151-38 class had been divided into two groups: Prosecution (Affirmative of Pamela Smart’s guilt) vs. Defense (Negative- Pamela Smart is innocent), prior to this eventful day. During the debate, both sides provided valid evidence for their arguments on the Smart Trial. Being on the Defense side allows me to provide an account of the events that occurred during this student-debate and also a reflection on how effectively my team members debated Pamela Smart’s innocence. First and foremost, the…

Looking back a week later, the Young Democrats High School Leadership Academy was nowhere near what I imagined. And I mean that in a good way. “Are my brothers and dad next?” I questioned myself. July 7th, in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, I walked for miles alongside my fellow brothers and sisters to fight for our rights of justice and freedom. Trayvon Martin and Philando Castile are just two victims of the many police brutalities that has happened in the United States. I live in a place where humans of color are still struggling to find equality.…

I was excited to begin this week’s reading of the book, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. Many people have told me about the book but I had never gotten free time to read it. I was excited about it because of the thesis of the book which states that the system of mass incarceration that is based on the war on drugs is strategically created to control blacks in America. The prison system is used to marginalize blacks economically, politically, and socially, just like in the Jim Crow era where there existed laws that discriminated against African Americans.…

Prior to the mock jury activity in class, I did not know or understand much about the judicial or trial process. In this paper, I will just summarize the trial, my thoughts on the jury process and if I think justice is achieved through these systems. I have been in a court situation before where I have needed to testify, so I understand a bit more about the trial system than someone who hasn’t experienced it. The mock trial was a very engaging and helpful activity where I was able to more fully understand what happens in a trial. I was able to put myself in the juror’s shoes and to feel how tough of a decision it is because someone’s life is in your hands.…

When I entered the courtroom, the previous case was just beginning to conclude. I was very surprised at the routine nature of the hearings; defendants and legal advisors seemed to cycle in and out of the room and the benches, with little disruption. Unlike some television programs that depict major celebrations or periods of despair following a verdict/hearing, I found the process of going through cases to be fairly nondescript. Defendants were…

The course delivery was such that as a student, I was able to use my existing knowledge and skills, in addition to that of my peers, to analyse and explore complex organisational problems. This course has challenged the way I think and deepened my understanding of the problem-solving process, which has enabled me to perceive issues from new perspectives, I once would not have considered.
