Introduction
For this mock therapy session, I was assigned the role of the therapist and my husband was assigned the role of the client. We explored his different stress factors and how he chose to deal with them. My objection was to establish a safe and nonjudgmental environment, "assist my client with a better self understanding and alter their self concept, and behavior" Corsini & Wedding, 2014, p. 143). The rest of this paper would examine how I applied person centered counseling techniques to this session.
The Problem Before starting, I informed my "client" that this session would be shared with my professor as a class assignment (ACA, 2014) . In addition, I asked for verbal permission to release data gathered to my professor (ACA, 2014). I was surprised with his openness concerning his stresses and how I became comfortable with the silence, until he was ready to fill it. I think the paraphrasing and reflection really help ease him into talking. I didn't struggle with what to ask and what not to. He answered all my unasked questions. On the other hand, I had extreme difficulties with remaining unbiased and with unconditional positive regard. As his wife, I felt the need to comfort him and give advice to help him. Lastly, I had to constantly monitor my own feels and views.
Summary of Key Points I learned, from this entire experience, that counseling is not necessarily giving advice. Counseling is creating a safe space and assisting the client with embracing his or her feelings. It is understanding that the client does not have to agree or disagree with your views, but embrace their views and feelings. This is done by active listening to verbal and body language, having an empathic understanding, reflectively responding and self
