Saul McLeod, the author of the article Stereotype, states that “A stereotype is ‘...a fixed, overgeneralized belief about a particular group or class of people.’ ”(Cardwell, 1996). Stereotypes are nothing more than assumptions made about groups of people without getting to know them. They are usually exaggerated and blown far out of proportion. By stereotyping a certain group people seem to think that everyone in that group has many of the same characteristics and abilities. Stereotypes are both positive and negative, but most stereotypes are considered to be offensive. Stereotypes are caused by over exaggerations of the truth and they categorize groups. Stereotypes paint a picture of everyone in that group even if it's not true for all. For example, all blondes are dumb, or all jocks are bullies. Not all jocks are bullies nor are blondes dumb. Everyone sees stereotypes and misconceptions everywhere. In movies, at the mall, in school. Individually tending to stereotype because it is human nature to follow what others are doing. Once you hear something, then it automatically becomes real even if they may not be true. Overall misconceptions and stereotypes are made up things about groups and things that are taken too far, but our society tends to believe it no matter how unreal it may seem. Finding it easier to follow what has been created instead of coming up with our own judgements about the different groups that exist in our world. Our own selves want to believe that everything and everyone is the same because our society does not like complications. Always looking for the easy way out of everything and if one cannot find the easy way out, then not wanting to try to work for it. All in all stereotypes and misconceptions were created because of the laziness of the people. In our generation having to come up with many different stereotypes of all kinds of groups and no matter how crazy or unreal they sound our society will believe it. All it takes is one person to say something and once it gets out, then it out and people will believe and think about what was said.
