The article of Nacirema, relates to people’s judgement about a culture, based on the different practices and rituals. Otherwise known as ethnocentric fallacy, the reader focuses on the point of view that the culture of Nacirema is driven from witchcraft. Nevertheless, the article Nacirema illustrates how people define culture and judge them based on the norms in comparison to ones own.…
What is Culture? Before reading Chapter 3 of text and the article “Body Ritual among the Nacirema” my understanding of culture was plainly the way we, humans, live based on the environment we grow up in. Macionis defines culture as “the ways of thinking, they ways of acting, and the material objects that together form a people’s way of life”. In the text, the Author discusses the different ways people think, act and value around the world. The way people act in other regions of the world in contrast to us, Americans, and the importance of objects in different cultures.…

After I read the article “Body Ritual among the Nacirema”, I find that Nacirema is a tribe of “magic-hidden people” (Miner 507). In the article, the author writes, “they are a North American group living in the territory between the Canadian Creel the Yaqui and Tarahumare of Mexico, and the Carib and Arawak of the Antilles. Little is known of their origin, although tradition states that they came from the east” (Miner 503). The author clearly states that the Nacirema live as a little-known North American group. They are really Americans, because I find that Nacirema spelled backwards is American.…

American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.” Fear can be caused by many things and become many things, but the type of fear that causes people to stay quiet or even lie can be particularly devastating. A real life example of this fear could be as simple as a thief blaming their thievery on someone else; however, an extreme example of this devastation can be shown in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, where fear led an entire city to kill several of their own innocent people. Even though this story is technically historical fiction, it still provides fantastic scenarios of how fear defeats people. In act one a group of girls accused several people of witchcraft because they feared…
The goddesses of ancient Mexico played an important role not only in religion, but also in politics, culture, and art. They were very significant and influential figures in society which through stories and narratives about them, led people to justify how the world was created which they implement that on how societies should be created. In the article “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema,” Miner successfully persuades the audience that American’s fixation and obsession with the body’s appearance and well-being is absurd by using pathos to help persuade the readers to think the same way. He is able to achieve this by allowing his readers to form a view of this “tribe” before they realize mid-way through the essay that this article about people with bizarre customs and rituals are actual modern-day American’s. The author is writing this essay to the general public. He is doing this to inform his readers of a culture called the Nacirema. These people partake in rituals that seem unfamiliar to modern-day humans.…

Marriage: Duty vs. Love, Morality vs. Humanism “Mythology of a people is ‘the origin of the people’s philosophy, literature and religion’ and ‘the collective sub-consciousness of the whole people’” (Wang 1). Therefore, studying mythology will help us to understand how the perspectives of a people in a specific culture form and how their attitudes toward what they experience take shape. Furthermore, by comparing and contrasting different mythologies, we can explore how different peoples attempted to analyze the world and explain the phenomena around them and, thus, how different cultures developed the earliest branches of knowledge.
