This painting symbolizes the domestic housewife, or maid back then. The warm colors make you feel at home, and relaxed. The footwarmer by the milkmaid suggests it might be fall or winter when the cold weather starts to come in. She can also be cold from being next to a window with a cracked hole in it. Making bread porridge was very common in the 17th hundreds, and it is made with stale bread and milk. The act of pouring milk out from the jug to the bowl, captivated the important part in baking. Back in the day milk was very important in daily life. Milk is a life nourishing liquid that every mammal needs, so the pouring of the milk represents feeding and nourishment. He outfit represents the everyday chores of a peasant women. Her skirt is tucked in, so it does not get dirty, and she has an apron covering her yellow top. During this time, artists started painting everyday life people instead of just painting nobles. Vermeer is illustrating what many of the women had the so back in this time, and still today with stay at home moms. The foot warmer by her represents no central heating since electricity did not come into play until the 1900’s.
