Sixth grade math is the chosen subject and grade level. Sixth grade math instruction should focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division …show more content…
When evaluating the standards in regard to expression and equation, we can explore the difference between fifth, sixth, and seventh grade standards. The fifth grade curriculum does not particularly have an expression and equation standard. Fifth grade standards focus on order of operations and algebraic thinking. Students at the fifth grade level learn to write and interpret numerical expressions. According to 6.EE.4, sixth grade students should identify when two expressions are equivalent (i.e., when the two expressions name the same number regardless of which value is substituted into them). For example, the expressions y + y + y and 3y are equivalent because they name the same number regardless of which number y stands for (Carey, Benton, Breene, Trecina, Oakley, and Davis 2014). By seventh grade, according to 7.EE.4 seventh grade students should use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities. a.Solve word problems leading to equations of the form px + q = r and p(x +q) = r, where p, q, and
