Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…
The main character of The Secret Life of Bees is Lily Melissa Owens, a 13-year-old girl (who turns 14-years-old later in the book on July 4) who lives with her father, Terrence Ray Owens (referred to as T. Ray), who is an abusive father. The year this novel is placed in is 1964, with all of the events occurring within a few months. Lily and her cruel father have lived on a peach farm alone since Lily’s mom, Deborah Fontanel, died when she was four-years-old. T. Ray informs Lily that she accidentally shot her when he and Deborah were fighting. The next day, Rosaleen, the black housekeeper, wants to go into town in order to register to vote, and Lily wants to go with her.…
This letter offers my complete support of Anniesha Parillon in DeVry Education Group Scholarship opportunity. I have known Ms. Parillon since winter of 2010, where we worked collaboratively at Stanley M. Isaacs Afterschool program and TASC Americorp. As colleagues, we worked closely and collaborated on a variety of assignments, activities and daily lessons for our students through the implication of STEM. In my capacity of working with Anniesha, she has been professional and has contributed an immense amount to the well-being and education of the students she has worked with.…
My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…
Today I worked on my patient Andrea Cabrera. She has generalized moderate chronic periodontitis with localized advanced periodontitis. I reviewed her medical history and had to update it because her physician changed her blood pressure medication. For both clinic section, her blood pressure was below 125/83. After doing a pre-procedure rinse with Listerine, I did an EIOE and everything was within normal limits.…
The teacher at Ritenour that has influenced me the most is Mrs. Haar-Chapman or for short Mrs. HC. She influenced me the most, in my walk towards college. Before I began a strive for college, I wasn't sure I was cut out for the “college life”. She pushed me and my class as a whole to find a college and research about it, at first I thought it was a bit ridiculous, I won't deny it. She made us dive into researching about our future.…
I really enjoyed the guest speaker, Cathleen Morgan and was quite impressed with her forsaking aspect of being on the board of education. She gave a new insight on the idea that we are no longer a minority and majority school district. Whites were truly the minority, of which 35% are Hispanics and 15% are black. The idea that teaching with these numbers is extremely hard to do and is a challenge. The challenge of experiencing a certain culture and gaining a new culture at the same time.…
During my assessment of Miss Doe, I learned that Miss Doe is concerned about her health, family problems, and lack of support, anxiety, depression, and living alone. She feels this way because of her current situation. Miss Doe is experiencing an aggressive form of cancer that is rapidly spreading. Consequently, this is causing her to experience anxiety and depression. From day to day she does not know what to expect.…
When asked who they would want to spend the afternoon with, many people would respond with names approximative to the likes of George Washington or Albert Einstein. This is justifiable- both were noteworthy men who accomplished a substantial amount in their lifetime. Others would respond with people close to them who bear a great deal of influence on their lives, such as parents or friends. There are many significant individuals throughout history and people who have played important roles in my life so far, but if I could select one person to spend the afternoon with, I would choose Sally Ride, the first American woman astronaut.…
Since I wasn't able to visit my eighth graders on our usual schedule (my teaching class had an in-class day to reconnect with each other and learn information for our teaching exam- sad face.) , I felt very happy to go visit my kids today! As I entered Ms. Fentress' room when her AI students were exiting, I realized that these kids are just like high school kids. One boy was jamming out to his music, and even rapped for his classmates. It's always funny to see how their distinct personalities intertwine with one-another to make it a friendly atmosphere.…
I was a bit drawn back that the author, Maxine Hong Kingston, chose to reveal such private details about her family in the first couple of lines. After reading the first paragraph, I was okay. Still, it did not take away from the suspense of the memoir or reading. I did not mind knowing the basis of the story in the beginning. In fact, it made me find the book more interesting.…
As one of the English instructors at Lenape Tech in Ford City, PA I have had the honor of knowing Hannah Morda. Hannah was a student in my Honors English class in the 2015—2016 school year. Additionally, I served as one of Hannah’s advisors for the national organization, SkillsUSA, and Lenape’s student government. As a member of SkillsUSA, Hannah represented our school as a Western Region officer in her junior year. Through this program, she was part of a small group of students who ran the three-day conference which showcased her abilities as a leader.…
My first, and possibly biggest, endeavor as an incoming student was joining PRISM, the Advanced Program for Integrated Science and Math. The program provides some of the most advanced undergraduate science courses at UM and I was eager to take on the challenge. The rigor of the classes pushed me to expand my critical thinking skills and explore my scientific interests through integrated learning approaches. Being a part of this program allowed me to advance myself academically, make valuable connections across scientific disciplines, and gain vital experience in group-based learning through peer-driven labs, discussion sections, and study…
Shirley Murrays presentation made me think twice about the career I’m pursuing to take. I learned a lot with her presentation because she gave very important information on what classes to take, what graduate schools expect from you and that if you don’t put in the effort then it wont work out at the end. The presentation Shirley Murrays presented helped me a lot on what to focus on for my major. One of things I found interested that she talked about was how Occupational Therapy (OT) was a very competitive field.…
Lilian Cu Spindler English 1301 3 December 2015 Gender Inequality in STEM Fields Background It is no secret that girls and women are underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematic fields, even in this day and age. Even students agree with each other that girls should be more celebrated in these areas. For example, “In 1968, Caltech male students argued that nerds needed a civilizing female presence.…
