Danny is one of the main characters in this book who goes through a plethora of obstacles throughout his childhood and teenage years. Danny is dealing with an internal conflict, torn between his Mexican heritage and belonging to Mexican and white communities. Growing up, Danny and his family were in a poor situation. In the beginning, Danny does not know why his dad left; he believes that his dad went back to Mexico because his son is part white, but in reality, he is in prison. Senior once told Danny and Uno about seeing his problem through the eyes of an outsider. One day Danny was playing with the neighborhood kids in the cul-de-sac when he first moved in: “Wonder what these people think of him. The new kid is in. The light-skinned kid is a snob. Wonder if any of them will be his friends this summer.” (18). This changed one of my perspectives on the world by understanding that we should appreciate what we have; everyone grows up in various backgrounds and statuses.
