Metaphorical Cliff Narrative

Generally, a wrong turn is a bad thing. There are many possible consequences, almost always resulting in a struggle to overcome a metaphorical cliff. Or in my case, a literal cliff. A wrong turn resulted in two thousand feet of seventy degree incline. However, sometimes the alternative results in a much better experience than what had been planned. After five days and fifty miles of backpacking with eleven other boy scouts through a rough New Mexican landscape, we were finally on the last stretch, but we still had one more mountain to climb, the Tooth of Time. After a five mile walk to the base of the mountain, it was supposed to take an hour to reach the top, and slightly less to get back down. So after an early rise to reach our destination on time, we set off to finish the job.
We woke at 3:00 AM, somehow both exhausted and excited. The hike down was fairly easy. By 6:00 AM, we reached the reached the base of the

It was extremely steep, with large rocks, trees, and cacti littered around any path we tried to take. After only a few minutes, we had completely lost the trail, and we were constantly trying to follow any small opening that vaguely looked like a path. The conditions were awful; the trail was exposed to the sun, the heat beat down on my back, and every step triggered a jolt of pain from my blistered foot and a fear of dropping down several hundred feet. We did not realize it until later, but we had strayed far off the trail. There was supposed to be a better path up through a section of the ridge with a gentler incline, but somehow we lost the trail near the base. Instead of climbing the safer, easier path, we climbed directly up the side of the mountain. It was the best climb of my life. Every step unleashed a new view of the massive mountain range clashing with clear plains to the side. It was incredible. The hike provided challenges I had never faced before, coupled with astonishing views, and for that I am

With the sun shining, the way back felt much easier. The weather became warmer and we could clearly see our path. As I had predicted before, there was no major difficulty we faced in climbing this mountain. As soon as we reached the second base, my friend, Michael, challenged me to get back to the first base in just 1 hour. I accepted this challenge in order to prove my mountain climbing skill.…

According to the BLM ranger who was about the lead a group of school children, this eleven mile round trip trail climbs 1,400 feet, most of it in the last two and a half miles. The first three miles is open to bikes, which shortens the trip from over six hours to about four. The sign at the trail head says the first three miles are fairly level and the rest moderately strenuous. However, there are some places on the first section that can intimidate all but the most avid biker. The rest is very steep and includes 235 wooden steps in groups of four to fifteen, scattered along the trail.…

I’ve never seen him have so much pain, for it appeared as if all life was removed from him. When he saw me finish the trek, that motivated him finish the part of the hike which you climb up two metal cables that allow hikers to climb four hundred feet to the summit free handed. You either conquer or die. Being partially debilitated sitting in aw at the scenery; we wondered how could anything be so spectacular, so untouched, so pure. We were baffled.…

As mentioned earlier, it's really like walking on an escalator downhill. Definitely one of the longest day hikes I've been on. It was nine hours up, and a five hours down with 30 minutes on the summit. The original plan was to pack camp immediately after the descent and make for the trailhead and the truck.…

Once everyone got situated, they brought over the guy that we would be carrying all the way up the mountain. His name was Brad, he had a bad knee, and he was almost 300 pounds. Right then we knew that it was not going to be a cake walk walking all the way up the mountain. But we were still in high spirt; we knew that we were changing this kid’s life by helping him hike a mountain. They assistants and instructors came over and started to strap Brad in his harness.…

When I hiked up Bishop Peak in San Luis Obispo, I enjoyed it so much I wrote it up for California Explorer (May/June 2014). Since then I’ve wondered about the other ancient volcanic plugs that make up the nine sisters, a group that starts with Morro Rock and ends at Islay Hill in the southeast corner of San Luis Obispo. I decided to trek down to the area with the idea of exploring the other morros, or at least the ones open to exploration. Morro Rock is environmentally sensitive and closed to climbing. Chumash Peak has no access, and Cerro Romauldo is used only by the National Guard.…

After waking at midnight to start our summit in order to beat the possible rainstorms, we were off to climb Mt. Massive, the second tallest mountain in Colorado. Climbing rocks with heavy backpacks, crossing rivers, bushwhacking about 3 and a half miles, and dealing with heavy winds that almost blew us over, we finally found the trail!…

So once upon a time I decided that I would learn how to ski. Now, I'm pretty sure everybody knows what skiing is. Where you get on a lift, go up a mountain, ski down, and then start all over again. Turns out there is a lot more to it than just pointing your skis in the direction you want to go and then ta-da. Learning how to stop is probably a very crucial factor in skiing, but I thought it was so easy that I could do it without much instruction.…

Like many people I am a lover of adventure and am always on the lookout for the next challenge/experience to partake in. Unfortunately my schedule doesn’t always permit the time for me to be adventurous as I’d like, so by the time summer came along I was craving a big adventure and I only went and climbed Japan’s #1 Mountain! Now I must admit I probably didn’t do as much preparation and precision planning as I should have (I’m guilty of being impulsive as well as adventurous) and though it was a once in a lifetime experience as you’ll read further on some better preparation wouldn’t have gone amiss!…
