Purpose
This proposal was written in response to RFP No. MU-2014-03. In this RFP, Dr. Pam Brewer identified a problem with the current recycling and sustainability program at Mercer University and requested that the program be improved and expanded upon. As students of industrial management, marketing, and mechanical engineering we feel that we are capable and competent to respond to this request. Currently, the recycling program at Mercer University lacks unity and does not address many of the potential areas for recycling on campus. This proposal offers a solution that would allow Mercer to better compete with larger universities with more …show more content…
The program will have an established hierarchy that lends to renewability so that it may continue in successive years.
The program must provide an initiative or way to actively engage students in recycling. While faculty members may be more invested in the need for sustainability on Mercer’s campus, students are less likely to be proactive in their attempts to recycle. Therefore, the program will make use of positive feedback techniques through rewards.
The program should provide informational material to every undergraduate student that highlights the Green Points incentive program. This information will be made available in a central location on campus as well as online. This information will also be distributed during move-in and at Bear Fair.
The program should provide educational material to faculty, staff, and students about recycling on Mercer’s Macon campus and how they can participate via a webpage to increase accessibility.
The program should attempt to limit contamination whenever possible because contamination is one of the leading problems facing University recycling …show more content…
While calling other schools, the University of Georgia told us something that caught our attention. After the football game is over, they use volunteer groups (with no more than 20 people in the group) to clean the stadium. Each group is assigned to a section of the stadium and given a list of recyclable items that they may encounter in the stadium and need to collect. After our conversation, we knew this could be done at Mercer because of its efficiency at a large university such as UGA. Therefore, the volunteer groups will go through the stadium and collect recyclable, and the normal cleaning crew would come to clean the stadium of any remaining trash afterwards. Anyone can volunteer to collect recyclables. High school students could gain community service hours towards their graduation quotes, and it is possible that Mercer students who volunteer to clean the stadium will receive Green Points for their
