Mentoring Into Vocation

In his book, Mentoring Into Vocation, Dr. Fowler delineates that the role and relationship between a mentor and a mentee is “sacred and transformational.” (p. 12) It does not matter whether a relationship is based off of secularism or otherwise. This relationship and the journey is supposed to be relational and practical in nature. (p.32)
The transformative journey of mentoring does not involve “control” by a mentor. (p. 63) I concur with this perception because the metaphorical understanding of church being a “vessel” is a preliminary requirement of transformation. Since from a theological point of view, death precedes resurrection, the platform and journey of resurrection requires a “molding” work. (p. 63) To experience this travel of molding, a mentor proves his or her role as a a shepherd (p. 54) and prophet, one that is related to the future of a mentee. (p. 62) Dr. Fowler describes this as “future oriented.”(p.62) “Discernment,” “fellowship and companionship” are few of the responsibilities that a shepherd is responsible for. (p. 56) Naming the process of this formative journey also necessitates articulation. (p. 108) The pillar of “joint” takes place to renew the church (p. 108) which I perceive as working toward resurrection. If the mentee receives

In contrast, I would argue that the role of a pastor does include some sort of parenthood. The role of a pastor as a mentor to his or her mentees is parallel to the Biblical metaphor of a shepherd to his or her sheep. While discussing the role of a pastor in the class, I argued that the relationship between a pastor and his or her people is that like a shepherd’s relationship to his or her sheep. Figurative shepherds are to listen, pray, guide, sacrifice, counsel, forgive, appreciate, welcome and empathize” with his or her sheep. In general, parents fulfill these responsibilities toward their

Firstly, in this essay, we will be comparing and contrast, Timothy Witmer’s framework for leadership with his “old shepherd friend” Richard Baxter in The Reformed Pastor (1657) Secondly, we are going to Evaluate Witmer’s framework for leadership in which extant is biblical, practical and relevant to my personal context. he function of pastor that best engages me and my calling is that of the pastor as a counselor; Willimon talks about the curate in this function in chapter seven in his book Pastor. There are many reasons why I see this role important in my vocation as a chaplain. There are several ways in which this image related to my emerging ecclesiology. The first thing I can relate to is what Tim Crutcher talks about in chapter six on “tradition at its best”. The early concept of the church is that the church is all alone (76).…

Pastors must be servant-leaders and not lord it over their flock. Gregory presents important points with much wisdom that pastors would do well to follow as an example. There are some (many) who should not be in pastoral ministry because they lead their flock astray. This is due to the fact that there are pastors who do not have sound doctrine which leads to wolves invading the flock. One must be called into pastoral ministry by God in order to do this important work.…

At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…

Eli and His Sons Hopni and Phinehas belong to the priestly division of the Levites and were priests of the tabernacle in Shiloh. Eli became a priest in Israel and a judge for forty years. However, Eli lacked zeal for the Lord because his heart was more inclined towards his sons, Hopni and Phinehas, than to God. I presumed Eli’s sons turned wicked because their father failed to teach and discipline in the ways of God that they did not know Him. (1 Samuel 1:12)…

After reading the article “Teaching as a Vocation” by Duane Huber, I can see how the teaching profession has changed, yet remained the same, since this article was written. I am able to completely understand the basic concept behind the article, but I don’t feel that the power struggle between teachers and administration that the author speaks of is as intense as what is described. The author also speaks of the ‘vulnerability’ of teachers, which is another concept that I don’t quite agree with. There are several points made in this article that I feel have evolved in the two decades since this article was written.…
