Despite the theme of modern and classic literature the themes of which men are portrayed as are vast, while the theme of character development that has surrounds women throughout history followed the same concept, a triangle concept of man being in the center while women being spread in one of two directions. Women in literature throughout history, especially in “The Blank Page", "Goblin Fruit", and "Goblin Market" either have a positive characteristics or negative characteristics about the female main character. Nonetheless, if a man or woman is writing the piece of literature women who are portrayed with positive characteristics it means that these women are good, wealthy, proper women who know what is expected of them and follow the guidelines in which society has layout for her. On the opposite when a woman is portrayed with negative characteristics, it means that she is usually a woman of the night, a prostitute, a slut, poor, an improper woman who knows the what is expected of her and choices to not obey the social norms or was forced out of the social the social norm due to an incident. “The blank page” consists of ethnic differences based on race, gender, culture, and sexuality which is consistent with their traditions. The story takes place in the front of the entrance of the ancient city in Portugal with the storytelling offering to tell a story which is highly shamed which was the true story that a story tell can tell. The story which has been handed down to her, which means she has been telling stories for the past two hundred years. The shocking part of the first few paragraphs of the story in the concept of the ancient city and the traditions that it will hold. The relationship of a blank sheet is with the virginity of a young woman. In the text the phrase “‘who then,’ she continues, ‘tells a diner tale than any of us? Silence does. And where does a deeper tale than upon the most perfectly printed pages of the most precious book? Upon the blank page” (Dinesen 1). The relationship of a young woman's virginity and that of a perfect blank page are the same. In this time a woman's virginity being the only thing that her parents can offer to her new husband is considered to be an honor that they would praise. “Virginem eam tenemus – ‘we declare her to have been a virgin’” is what is said of the fathers to inform all of the people in the town that the daughter is truly to be a virgin and ready to be married. …show more content…
Men in this time period and men in modern literature virginity is not precious to them while for women it is one of the pillars of being a good, modest women. Woman whom are portrayed with positive characteristics are of good, wealthy, proper women who know what is expected of them and follow the guidelines in which society has layout for her, virgins which make them a modest woman. Men are portrayed in any shape and form, the male characters can be good, but sexual, be a thief, but have good morals as in Robin Hood, but for women it is either moral or immoral and no between. These Goblins are characters from your nightmare. Goblins have also been used in within Gypsy culture. The Goblins trying to taunt the young girls to eat their fruit, which they were warned to never eat. “Goblin Market” has a different characteristic on the common characteristic of women in literature. Women through time, although they have been inspired by women in reality only show two types of characteristics in literature, they are either good or bad with no in between.
