Chronic Pain, Insomnia and loss of appetite are only a few of the hundreds of sicknesses that can be treated with medical marijuana. Cancer and HIV are two of the very popular diseases that are known to cause a patient excruciating pain. Medical marijuana would act to alleviate some of this pain, but by it only being available in certain states, there are many of our people that do not have the ability to obtain relief from it legally. Also, due to residency requirements people may not be able to venture to another state to get it, and they definitely would not be allowed to travel with it. Medical marijuana should be made legal everywhere in the United States so that it is available locally to the people in need. No one should have to live in pain when there is help for them. It is cruelty for us to look at a dying person and tell them that there is a medicine that could possibly help them but it remains illegal. Pharmaceutical drugs are meant to treat illness and disease. However, they are killing Americans in large numbers every year. Being highly addictive and easy to abuse, accidental overdose and ingesting multiple prescription drugs has ended many lives. These have shown to be more dangerous than medical marijuana. Making medical marijuana legal across the entire United States could give our economy a boost and save billions of dollars. There would be a considerably lower percentage of convictions from purchasing marijuana illegally because the people who need it for treatment would now be able to go to their physician. Trafficking and possession arrests would be significantly eliminated and our incarceration costs would decrease. The money saved would enable us to open up more dispensaries and create millions of jobs across the nation. More banks would be willing to work with the people that run the dispensaries, which would allow businesses to accept credit and debit cards instead of having to run a cash only operation.
Some people are against medical marijuana being permitted because they fear extensive legal and social problems due to abuse and availability to children. Some also believe that the fight to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes is just a gateway to making it acceptable for recreational use. However, the legalization of this medicine would do just the opposite. Lawmakers would be able to have control over who dispenses and receives the marijuana, cutting out illegal practices from drug cartels and make it available only to patients who have been medically diagnosed and have a necessity for
