Medical Assistant Career

Careers, jobs, college, finishing high school, and other extra activities are all on my plate (and I know other students’ plates as well), and I am only a junior in high school. My mom is kind of shocked about how much pressure they put on high school students nowadays for what they what to go into and do in life. Last week friday, I went on a college visit to Cornerstone University. It is a great Christian university, but it overwhelmed me with all the different major and minor options I could choose from. Since about fifth grade, I started thinking about what I wanted to do after school. Then I wanted to become a teacher. Sounds great right? The main job of a medical assistant is to assist the doctor during appointments. The MA will record patient’s information, take blood pressures, give injections, and prepare blood samples (“U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics”). Their work also includes some office work at a desk. They also answer phone calls and make appointments (ExploreHealthCareers). This career interested me because I am interested in medical things, but I don’t want to go through many years of schooling to become a doctor. Plus I like assisting people and helping people out in simple or more complicated tasks. An typical or average day for a MA is they arrive at the office when it open, most open around eight am. After you get there you prepare rooms for incoming patients, listen to phone calls that came in from the previous night, review the daily schedule with the physician, organize charts, and fill out paperwork. Throughout the day you assist the physician when needed. MAs get breaks including a lunch break (“What Is a Typical MA Workday Like?”). As patients arrive you need to make sure that things follow smoothly. At the end of the day you may have to stay later to finish certain
