In the last decade there has been a continuous increase in the consumption and use of technology, particularly with hand-held devices. The main concern of this essay is how the new targeted audience has changed and expanded to focus more attention towards the youth, who are at an early age of development. Reading articles, analyzing scientific reports and watching interviews provided information to prove how psychological side-effects are affecting social and physical behavior. Spending too much time on an electronic device can lead to serious problems like insomnia and anxiety; these disorders are caused from the bright lights and wide range of colors on an LCD screen that stimulates the brain. A study conducted on adults proved …show more content…
The brain is made of cells and between the cells are axons and dendrites that transmit and receive electric pulses. When active, the brain triggers a release of chemicals called neurotransmitters which creates a pathway for communication. This pathway allows the brain to form thoughts, memories and emotions. In 1950 neurophysiological John Zachary Young believed in a “mixture of doubting with the certainty” and challenged previous ideas, as he worked to understand how the nervous system servers as communication to the rest of the body (Reith Lectures). Young claimed that the brain was constantly developing and growing, and a few years later another scientist, Merzenich, through an experiment on a monkey’s brain, proved Young's claim. Merzenich created a micromap of the sensations that formed between tapping the tip of the monkey’s finger to the response inside its brain, he then damaged the hand and began tapping in a new location. At first the brain told the monkey that the tapping was still happening at the tip of the finger but after a few months the brain corrected itself to the actual location (Carr). The experiment provided evidence that confirmed the brain is “constantly developing and growing” and the same logic can be applied to the consumption of the digital world as it is creating a strain …show more content…
Synapses is the process of learning, and during the beginning of life the brain is being highly influenced and shaped. The only way to keep a trait is to have it repeated over to the synapses multiple times, as the brain is a “processes of creating, strengthening, and discarding”(childwelfare.gov). If children are presented with ability to access cell phones and tablets at an early age of development the digital world will become part of their environment. Professors of psychology and authors of Behavioral Genetics proved that the study of human behavior can be observed through the “patterns of resemblance” within an environment. Usually this context is put to the physical environment, such as: a child growing up in a cold climate will learn how to adapt and keep warm, but the same idea can be put to the overexposure of electronics. As the advancements of technology in the past decade has drastically changed, a child's environment and thought process will change as well. The brain will adapt to function with the bright lights and constant motion of the digital
