The global society approach is the first theory of globalization. People’s lives are affected by the media, and that the globalization of media creates awareness. Controversial issues are then mostly on people’s minds, making the issues circulate through the masses. A backlash against this theory is that there is global inequality. In the media, it is shown as the ‘flashy, everything is good’ persona, while in all truth, there is some not so ‘pretty’ parts of the media such as poverty.
The global culture approach is the second theory of globalization. This approach argues the idea of culture being all the same. All cultures become one, and there are no questions about it. The dominant ideology is followed and nobody will rebel.
The World System approach, the third theory, focuses on capitalism as a dominant force in globalization. In order to make the most money, this approach argues that producing content that will entice consumers will translate into money and therefore, profits.
Lastly, the Global capitalism approach focuses on the effects of globalization on capitalism. The theory argues that this is the epitome of capitalism and the political and economic parts of globalization will benefit the most. Transnational media industries are small companies that are big parts of influencing global media. They create more ‘worldly’ and more ethnically diverse content to influence the mass audiences.
Homogenization is the idea of having multiple cultures merging into a single culture. According to the global culture approach to globalization, homogenization is the convergence of differences in culture to be integrated into a single, universal culture. Information-rich and poor is defined as who is considered wealthy and developed, where the information poor, is deprived of this. The information-rich are able to extract as much information at their disposal and can create media content.
