Media Bias Research Paper

Our perception and view of people and events is largely influenced by the media. We may not realize it, but the first thing that we naturally start to do is label a person of first time seeing. For example, a new student has just registered to your school, thousands of adjectives pop up in our mind like: popular group, blonde, mean, pretty, and rich. It’s society (media) that defines our perceptions of people because not all blonde, popular girls are mean nor are all Muslims terrorists. When the media starts giving the notion that beauty is blonde hair and blue eyes or that all black people are gang members it sticks to our head and our judgments reflect on it. A story like the Chapel Hill triple homicide is at the bottom of the page in small font, even though it was a day before, Why? It’s simple every reporting channel has its own notion or view that they want the audience to have; they want your opinions and thinking to match theirs. Another media bias is bias by omission which is used unpredictably; bias by omission is making a certain side looking better than another. Think about it when writing an article you are going to support your side by giving details that make the victim or suspect more innocent, it is usually done in an implicit way where it’s not obvious, but you can still pin point. In the News Observer article “Chapel Hill police arrest man in triple homicide” the article gives so much details on the accomplishments of the three victims and portrayed them as a happy family, but almost nothing about the suspect like the way his wife felt. When you have an article that’s focusing on the achievements of a happy family and almost dehumanizing the suspect you as a person will feel bad and side with the victims thinking to yourself they didn’t deserve it and that they are just a typical family who were well
