Mechanical Engineers: Life Changing Creators From smothering smoke to rattling that shook the entire building, the machine began to crash and shut down completely. A panic fell across the room as the dramatic scene was taking place. Confusion and worry was being expressed through the eyes of every employee in the room. Production was at a halt and the business was in a crisis. Before anyone was able to make a move, a man carrying a tool bag stormed in and immediately was heading towards the machine. He began tearing the machine down as if he was performing surgery. This mechanical engineer finished the operation saving the business from a loss of production. Specifically mechanical engineers use their knowledge to repair and create machines. To be able to become a mechanical engineer one must attend a 4-year college and obtain a bachelor’s degree. Fergusons Career Guidance Center mentions although you can receive jobs without a four year degree it is better to have one (Fergusons). There are many jobs in this world that do not require an educational background, but an education can help in receiving better benefits and higher pay. “Mechanical Engineering programs get students prepared for applying many skills such as mathematical and scientific to their work. For more advancements a master’s degree can be very important. One of the highest certificates, a Ph. D, can even be earned that will give high standards, allowing for a better job outlook. This degree makes their work more advance, broadening their abilities” (“How to Become a Mechanical Engineer”). Advancement is key in being successful and an education can help guide in that direction. Business owners are looking for employees who have initiative and those who are hardworking. Having a higher level education shows the characteristics of someone who will make a difference, benefitting the business. “There is no on the job training. Just having the skills needed to get the degree is all that’s necessary” (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Education determines success and it can also be the determining factor in applying for jobs. Skills and abilities are what cause career choices to be different. Standards are set for all careers and in order to be successful in that job these standards must be met. Texas Cares points out that mechanical engineering requires specific sets of skills. Not only the basic math and science skills, but others that must be developed (Texas Workforce Commission). Adaptation and development is important in the workforce because one may not have all the skills necessary. “Important abilities that the mechanical engineering field requires include verbal, visual, and reasoning” (Fergusons). Being able to talk with people is important in all careers. Some people are born with poor communication skills and that is when development becomes important. No matter what career someone gets into adjustment is always necessary. Skills are looked at greatly because that determines what job is the best fit. The Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms the median pay for mechanical engineers is $83,060 per year which estimates to approximately $39.93 per hour (“Mechanical Engineers”). This is one of the lowest paying engineering jobs although it is one of the most important. Pay is a major idea that people look at when searching for the right job. They not only look at pay but they also seek stableness.

This increase is due to the fact there is an increase in demand for faster, less expensive, and more efficient technologies” (“Labor Market”).
Although being a mechanical engineer doesn’t pay the highest people tend to acquire jobs in this field in order to keep advancement in technologies flowing. “Electrical advances keeps employment high and the development of new devices is necessary for advancement” (Texas Workforce Commission).
