As one is pondering over a time in which they have hit rock bottom, what they’ll remember most is not the details of the event that occurred, but who was nearby to help them overcome the hurdle. Whether it is a child being separated from their parent, a woman escaping an abusive relationship, or a homosexual teenager on the brink of suicide, everyone needs to know that there is someone who cares about their well being; as a Social Worker, you provide a shoulder for a person to cry on and become the confidant they trust, while providing the proper skills and resources needed to guide them in the right direction.
Furthermore, social work is the ability to assist individuals in finding positive solutions to conquer the worst times of their lives. Pursuing this profession is to ensure that you are performing at your highest abilities to help a client; in addition to establishing a commitment to the core values and principles- service, social justice, dignity and worth of a person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence- that are set by the association. These vital values should constantly be applied to everyday life as we encounter diverse groups of people from different levels of society. Acquiring a balance between moral principles and an open mind, is imperative to succeed in this career; one must embody compassion to have the willingness to put another persons needs before their own, for you are genuinely reaching out to all people, whether they are your friends or not. I was sickened by the actions of the congregation, as they were not accepting of the individuals who were resting there; often, members would call the law enforcement and accuse the people of “trespassing”. Their behavior wounded my heart as I had the expectation that this particular organization would not oppress the less fortunate in ways equivalent to society; nonetheless, I wanted to show them that there are some of us within the church who are compassionate about their circumstances. For instance, I had created a ministry called ‘Breakfast on Us’ that provided breakfast every Sunday morning, predominately for those sleeping on the church stairs but was extended to the community; of course they were first hesitant, but a few weeks later, they opened up to me. As time progressed, individuals began sharing stories of how they have gotten to where they are; some would have family around the area but preferred the streets, many hated the stipulations that came with staying at a shelter, and others went to the church stairs because they were members when they were kids; it was the place of familiarity and comfort. Building a relationship with these individuals motivated me to advocate for the less fortunate in meetings; official officers sought to put fences surrounding the church, as they believed the persons resting on the property were destroying its beautification; whereas, they were responsible for its cleanliness. In attempt to transform the hearts of the members, I hosted a ‘Unity Dinner’ for the participants of the church and invited those who took resident on the stairs, providing food and an open discussion between the two parties to reach common grounds. In addition, my ultimate goal is be appointed as a Judge in one of the Juvenile Justice System, for a judge makes a conclusive decision on the direction a misguided child will go. I sincerely believe that there are other techniques, rather than incarcerations, to teach a lesson and ensure that they will never commit a crime again. A Masters in Social Work will guide me to the root of the problem and determine substantial solutions that will protect the future generation from making life-altering mistakes.
In addition to my long-term goals, I anticipate to attain a Masters degree and work full time in a social work related field while beginning my journey through law school. In the same fashion, I aspire to gain the knowledge to build a program that allows teenagers to express themselves freely without any judgment, while discovering effective ways to have parents of youth address issues of depression without making their young ones feel uncomfortable or
