There has been a lot of attention over the last few years on what role spirituality and religion have in health. When patients turn to spiritual or religious ways of coping, it can be associated with a decrease in both stress and depression, which in turn creates reduced rates of mortality in patients. When religious-accommodating approaches are merged with religious elements, the psychologist shows acceptance and respect for the religious client, and in turn, increases trust and elevates the therapeutic alliance. Religion and spirituality can be an invaluable factor in the process of imprinting and aiding in psychological well-being, positive coping skills, and resilience in religious clients. Integrating religion and spirituality into therapy and treatments can increase acceptability and accessibility among patients (Stanley, Bush, Camp, Jameson, Phillips, Barber & Cully,…
Spiritual care is important in finding hope and meaning in life through faith, love and hope. When health care professionals create a loving and compassionate environment that motivate acceptance and hope, the spiritual life of patient is enhanced (Mok.et al.,…
One might feel that Spirituality is of no help or guidance because it is a deeply personal form and no other person may be able to help. It might also appear that who should be listened to regarding spiritual guidance or the supreme confidence that man is his best judge and nobody else can guide, may also prevail. Defects in one’s…
Prayer leads to fruitfulness of good works and increased knowledge of God. And, an increased knowledge of God leads to more good works and more need to praise the Lord for Christ, prayer. This provides for the believers to produce good fruit that by the cause of will increase their knowledge of God. This precipitates preponderant works because that the believer’s knowledge of Will of God has enlarged. This positive feedback cycle will mature as long as the believer stays true to the path.…
This study was somewhat flawed as they only interviewed individuals at a Christian counseling sites. Overall, both clients and counselors wanted prayer to be said out loud in the sessions. It was interesting that clients wanted the counselors to bring up the topic of praying in a session. As a social worker in training, I would have never thought to bring this up to a client, rather let the client make the first move so to speak. It was also note-worthy that women were found to be more prayerful on the index and the higher the individual’s score the more prayer they expected from the counselor.…
Prayer practices include silence, imagination, examination, and respiratory. These different approaches to practicing prayer help engage students in different ways to think about and relate to God through fresh approaches. King also suggest the use of prayer ropes, postures and signing, icons and hours as a physical means of practicing prayer. Presence-Centered youth ministry also approaches scripture differently through the practices of storytelling, sacred reading and Lecto Divina which encourage students to think about and engage the Word in different and fresh ways. Finally this culminates in the practice of creating a rule of life.…
H. Norman Wright’s book taught me how to better prepare myself for when a crisis occurs. He teaches us about many different types of crisis from the crisis of death to the crisis of children. Dr. Wright (2011) teaches his readers how and when to integrate spirituality and religion when counseling someone in crisis. This helped me a great deal. As a counselor I have always felt uneasy when wanting to introduce spirituality and religion into my counseling setting.…
Rowan Williams uses the valuable insights of Origen, an early Christian theologian to present views on prayer. His thoughts on how one grows in prayer highlight the idea of growing in a Christian community. Williams’s conviction on prayer focusing on Christians way of praying that is letting Jesus’ prayer happen in one’s life, challenges me personally to have a paradigm shift regarding prayer. I firmly agree with him when he considers prayer as an experience of gazing into the depths of the Father’s love. It may seem unfathomable to most Christians, but Williams points out to the “Our Father” as a significant model to be used when praying, celebrating our relationship with the Father.…
For thousands of years, care of the inner self was primarily the domain of religion. The advent of modern psychology in the late 1800s put this care in new hands; today, approaches to integrating the worlds of Christianity and psychology span a broad range (Entwhistle, 2010). Some individuals or factions in each field of expertise view the other with contempt, viewing spiritual doctrine and psychological research/practice as incompatible. Others pick and choose aspects to sprinkle into their own field, such as psychologists who see therapeutic merit in prayer & meditation apart from the beliefs that ground them, or Christian counselors who develop or borrow therapeutic methods based on similarity to Christian disciplines without attention to empirical methodology…
Human beings also communicate their experience with God through prayer. Human beings communicating their experience with God through prayer shows the characteristic of Christian Spirituality is Prayer. It shows this characteristic because through prayer human beings are able to have intimacy with…
This will be a long-term goal considering the complexities and expertise involved in research design. The more evidence we gather that warrants implementation of EBP, the greater influence we have over healthcare policy and change (Grove et al., 2015). If we can present a substantial amount of evidence that prayer with patients has significant healing capabilities, it may be offered as a standard intervention in healthcare someday. I hope to search and search again in pursuit of EBP that changes healthcare outcomes for the betterment of all. This class has provided a foundation for how to navigate the research process, and I am grateful for the…
In the Lord’ Prayer, The Beatitudes, St Gregory of Nyssa says that “we ought always to pray and not to faint. For the effect of prayer is union with God, and if someone is with God, he is separated from the enemy.” It should be instant and intimate communication and is similar to what we enjoy with our best friend. St Gregory of Nyssa lists out a lot of good effects that prayer will bring such as “guard our chastity, control our temper and rid ourselves of vanity” etc. Luther also says one must unceasingly guard against sin and wrong-doing through continual prayer.…
Therefore, private prayer should be focused more on quality time spent in prayer with our Father. A Christian should pick a time that is more feasible to him. Corporate or public prayer is also essential in the believer’s life. One must be careful not to pray to God in the way the hypocrites do. The believer’s prayer should be genuine.…
4MAT Review on McMinn Stephanie Dooley Liberty University Summary This is a review on the book Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality in Christian Counseling written by Mark R. McMinn, Ph.D. This book is a great resource for someone who has chosen the path of Christian counseling. The author states that the main idea of the book is, “this is a book for those wanting to investigate the frontier of intra-disciplinary integration” (McMinn, 2011, p. 9).…
Several studies have been presented that show a correlation between prayer and relationships. Research has found that not only does the person being prayed for receive aid but so does the person that is doing the praying. There have been test conducted that suggests there is an indirect effect involving the people who are praying for others. Researchers unexpectedly found that there was an increases in hope, forgiveness, and trustingness being found in the supplicant (Finchanm). The examiners were not expecting to find anything dealing with or happening to the person praying.…
