She writes this to bring to light the problems African Americans are having in America, a country that was meant to have equality for each and every citizen. In the poem she describes a bird that is stuck in a cage and wants to be free but for one reason or another can’t. The poem uses sight and touch to convey the sense of oppression and the dreams the bird has of freedom. For instance, “A free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky.” Maya uses many symbolic words for this poem for example, the cage represents bondage and slavery while the bird points towards people held captive in slavery. Through the symbols in each poem, the struggles that African Americans had to go through in order to achieve success (while going through hardships of being African American in that time and having others say they could not achieve success) are conveyed. One example of this in "Sympathy" is when the author compares the "caged bird" (Dunbar l. 1) to the bigger picture of how African Americans feel in this time period. He relates the first stanza to African Americans watching the outside world of success, promises, and greatness from inside a metaphorical cage- as though stating the African Americans cannot reach this, but only watch the gloriousness from inside this 'cage.' Angelou used a strategy when she wrote this poem, having every couple stanzas going from the free bird, to the caged bird and showing their roles in society at the time. In the poem, the free bird symbolizes the white people in society, and the caged bird symbolizes African Americans. In the first stanza, Angelou is explaining how the white people see a different side of the world as compared to the black people. For example, it is said that ,” the free bird leaps,” and ,” dips his wings in the orange sun rays”, meaning that the white people are free. They can do anything they want.…

In Maya Angelou’s poem “Caged Bird”, we straightway as the readers can tell from the title “Caged Bird” that the poem involves boundaries forced upon the bird inside due to the cage it’s in. Throughout the poem the bird in the cage is compared to a bird with freedom, this in depth symbolizes the struggles African Americans had during the era of white superiority. The free bird represents a person who is living a fortunate life and is free to do as he or she wishes, while on the other the caged bird signifies someone who has limits and cannot do anything. Maya Angelou also comes from a background of racial prejudices and discrimination so this is what she tries to convey throughout the poem. There are many themes explored in this poem such as the misfortune and survival of the unfittest.…
