Classroom Civility Reflection

Improved Essays
The following reflection is based upon the following articles that intrigue me to become successful from the textbook “How to be a Master Student 6th edition”. Most of the articles that are going to be mentioned are strategies that I believe will benefit my own life and future. The first article that I selected is called “Classroom civility – what’s in it for you” in the introduction chapter of the textbook pages 15-16. A key concept that’s highlighted in this article is to participate fully in classes. The purpose is to learn and engage throughout the class. Especially in University, we paid just to learn and get the credit we need for our future jobs. It’ll be a waste of money if we just go there just go on our distractions instead of being active in class. This resonates with me because …show more content…
This will allow me to picture all the information and it helps me to learn it faster instead of by paragraphs of text. Pictures allow me to get the ideas memorized so that I can get the concepts faster and easier. The sixth article that I selected is called “When reading is tough” in the fourth chapter pages 144-145. A few concepts that’s highlighted in this article is getting engaged with the text, reading out loud, and continue to read. Reading is essential to help write and develop skills in English. Furthermore, it helps a lot especially in University since professors normally assign readings in the textbook. This resonates with me because reading is not my greatest strength, but this is something that I can try to develop in University. One thing I can do is by reading 10 pages, then take a break, and come back to do the next 10 pages. This loop continues until I finish all my readings. Not only I’m making progress on my readings, I’m not consistently reading the whole thing at once. The breaks allow to take the readings into my brain without having the next readings being

In the article Supporting Secondary Readers, the author talks about the different strategies that the teachers use to support readers that are having trouble. According to the author, 8.7 million fourth through twelfth graders struggle to read their textbooks everyday while in school (Ness, 80). If the students cannot read their textbook, then it makes it real difficult for them to try and learn the material they are required to learn. A reason to support this is that the students will not be able to comprehend what they have read, because they are not able to read the information accurately. So this is where the teacher become the primary resource of making sure the children understand what is going on.…

Even though I have not finished reading “The Federalist Paper,” I still learn a lot about the foundation of American government and also about myself as a learner during the process. I know that I am more of a visual learner than an auditory learner, but I usually get bored really quickly whenever I read a long text that is full of information or does not have any pictures or graphs. So instead of reading “The Federalist Paper” in one go, I break it down into sections and then use a highlighter to highlight important facts and take notes as I go. These learning tips are not new, but I always find them helpful when I need to analyze the text later on. I also tend to get lost a lot when I read and end up skimming and skipping throughout the text.…

Such as I sit here in class and write this letter to you, I find for myself thinking nearly the reading processes we’ve learned. The Instructor taught us two dissimilar types of reading procedures. In the first reading procedure, he told us to distinct the reading into units. On the left boundary of these segments, he told us to write a small account of the section. On the correct margin, he had us magnet pictures that represents what occurred in that section.…

When I first started ENGL 1101, I expected it to be like high school all over again. In high school I was always in the more advance classes. My expectations was not what I was not what I was expecting nor was prepared be to graded so hard on my essays and journals.…

The first article that is being analyzed is, Attribution Theory in the College Classroom: Examining the Relationship of Student Attributions and Instructional Dissent. The researchers were studying the relationship between student’s attributions of their instructor’s behaviors and their own three forms of dissent: expressive, rhetorical, and vengeful dissent. These three forms of dissent are characterized by the attributions the students’ make about the instructor. Attribution theory explains, “that people simplify their perceptions of social reality by making judgments about what causes others to act in particular ways” Fundamentals of Media Effects (Bryant, Thompson, & Finklea, 2013, p.101). My approach to reading has changed over the semester. Before this class, I would just read without taking notes. In reading, I would just read instead of looking up the difficult word or using context clues to figure out what the word means. Now during my reading I annotate and look up unknown vocabulary words. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…

In the world today, book reading is not as popular as it once was. Reading an interesting book is one of the greatest experiences anyone can partake in, but reading is not an experience that everyone enjoys. Depending on the book a person chooses to read, reading may take a great deal of time. To many, reading a long and enthralling book is an invigorating experience. However, some feel that reading a lengthy book can waste valuable time.…

This quarter I learned that I was terrible at close reading. However, more importantly I learned that close reading is not merely reading the text before you, but also involves digesting the text and questioning why the author used a certain rhetorical strategy or featured a certain detail. I learned to be more focused on on the reading and what message is being conveyed and how it is being conveyed. This is the first year I have heard the term close reading. In past years, my teachers implied they want us to close read…
