Master Harold Traumas

47.9% of children have had one or more adverse childhood experiences. Some examples of these traumas include abuse( both mental and physical), and alcoholic parents. The play "Master Harold" ... and the boys, shows how these traumas can affect a teens life and mindset. Hally seems to have experienced these traumas, and in the end they cause him to break down and lose an important friendship. Through external and internal struggle and conflict, we can see Hally grow as a person, and in due time, learn about himself and what he truly believes.
Hally internally struggles with his family life and life at home. He doesn’t seem to get along very well with either parent. “Those years are not remembered as the happiest ones of an unhappy childhood”(Fugard,24) Hally was unhappy in his childhood, and as we notice towards the end, seems to still be unhappy as a teenager. “ All right, Mom! I was just trying to… I’m sorry…. I said I’m sorry….”(Fugard, 33) His relationship with his mom, although better than with his dad, is still rocky. He took a risk in the friendship, and it will never be the same as it was. When all of Hally’s anger, frustration, and sadness couldn’t stay pent up, he snapped. It’s a common thing to happen. After holding in all your emotions for so long, they have to come out somewhere. Sometimes, you can let them out in writing, art, or other means. However, sometimes when they come out, it’s on a person. Then, it’s harder to fix the relationship with that person. If you’re lucky, with time and effort on both ends, you can save the friendship. Unfortunately, not everything can be fixed. Sometimes, you lose that person’s friendship, and can’t do anything about it. Hopefully, you’ll be able to learn how to deal with those emotions in a better way, and even if it’s too late with that person, it won’t be too late in a new
