A lot of terms were defined that I may have had the definitions a little bit off before reading this. While reading about the functional uses of religion, I could not help but to go back to the time I spent in Africa. I was there for a month and spent a majority of my time in a Monastery and worked alongside the Sisters in that Convent. I could really tell that the Sisters were held together by their religion. It gave them something in life. Many young girls would join the Convent at a young age because it gave them in some instances a better life and in others a simple feeling of being needed and a purpose. These people used their faith to get through everything. Their faith is what they used to get through trials or problems in their life. In many cases I do not know what they would have done if they did not have their faith to get them through the hard times. The girls in the Convent were taught love, compassion, discipline and so much more. The things they were taught in my mind, made them a better person. I never really thought of religion as a “glue” to their society. When I look back I can really see that their religion and faith is really what held the whole group of women
