The Marine Corps leadership sets itself apart from the other services. Marines have a common core of beliefs instilled while at recruit training. Leadership understands the most precious asset is the individual Marine. Leaders have a responsibility to motivate and inspire Marines. The speed and tempo of the ever-changing world, and Corps, has caused certain aspects of styles of leadership to change and has resulted in a split in ideology.…
The author, Lauren F. Serrano, believes women should not serve in the U.S Infantry. Serrano’s article, “Why Women Do Not Belong in the U.S. Infantry”, provides arguments supporting her main points. The main points Serrano includes; why the U.S. is not in need for women on the frontlines, the infantry brotherhood, and sexual assault cases. Serrano served as a Marine Officer and contributes her personal experiences from her service. Although Serrano agrees women are capable to serve in the military, she stresses the infantry is not the main job females should focus on.…
The heavy masculinity content during basic training in the United States Marine Corps at the time of the Vietnam War provided an emphasis on linking a soldier’s aggressive nature and overall masculinity that can supposedly lead to success, dominating the North Vietnamese troops. This wasn’t the case, however, as it backfired when the eventual withdrawal of American forces from Vietnam was highlighted as a significant blow to the male’s ego and attack on their powerful John Wayne-style heroic masculinity. Meanwhile, the Donut Dollies and American female nurses who volunteered were expected to play the role as the “girl next door”, a reminder to the male soldiers of who it was they were fighting for back home, even though their decision to…
Ladies merit more regard. For a long while now, ladies have been taking part in the military, which, obviously, initially just permitted men. During the time of their interest, ladies have shown that they are pretty much as able as their male partners. A year ago was an especially critical year for female troopers as they were at long last permitted to move into legions that were in the past all male. Jena McGregor, an author for the Washington Post, kept in touch with her considerations on this chronicled accomplishment for ladies in her piece "Military Women in Combat: Why making it Official Matters.…
Wade altered the course of American history through its demoralizing impact on women in the military, but also how it significantly benefited or hurt women in various ways relating to the American economy. Specifically, Roe v. Wade contributed to changing the course of American history through the lens of affecting women service members. According to a report done by the Department of Defense in 2022, “Fourteen percent of all active duty service members in the United States- about 200,000- are women” (Hernandez). The presence of women in the military not only emphasizes their importance and efforts, but also contributes to how their rights and freedoms, specifically those related to abortion, are affected and judged. Women service members become vulnerable to the judgment of others and higher-ups, solely based on their reproductive decisions.…
In the article living and Fitting Alongside Men, and Fitting In was by Steven Lee Myers, he mention about the negative and positive outcome of women that are joined in the military. The article gives information on the current status of women that are in the military. Also, the article describes how women that are in the military have their own living quarter for housing units. That article talks about sex and how it might end America military prowess. However, it talks about how now there are birth control and even ultrasound machines for safety.…
After witnessing the raising of the American Flag by Marines on the Japanese island stronghold of Iwo Jima in 1945, Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal turned to Marine General Holland “Howling Mad” Smith to exclaim, “The raising of the flag on Iwo Jima guarantees the Marine Corps for the next 500 years.” Unfortunately, Secretary Forrestal was unaware of another battle that had already begun in the halls of the Pentagon, the committee rooms of Congress, and in the court of public opinion that would threaten the existence of the Marine Corps less than a year after the heroic events on that south pacific island. As America emerged from World War Two, the call for economic responsibility became the top priority for all corners of government.…
During WWII, the Marine Corps had established itself as experts utilizing the doctrine of amphibious warfare. This was a significant resource as the US was engaging in an island hopping campaign throughout the Pacific Ocean. The Marines Corps had become so synonymous with amphibious warfare during WWII that the saying, “the Marines have landed” (Garand, G. & Strobridge, T., 1971, p. 13) became common in the US. Additionally, new tactics exploring the use of Marine close air support came to fruition in an attempt to inflict damage without committing large amounts of ground troops when possible. Throughout the war, the Marines engaged enemy forces in campaigns including those at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and many other locations…
The U.S. Marine Corps has been supporting the nation's conflicts since their founding in 1775. Their agile structure and unique capabilities make them the primary go to force for military operations and activities. Marines have been involved in several joint operational environments from stability operations with the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), to peace operations with the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), to counterinsurgency (COIN) operations in the aftermath of the war in Afghanistan, and counterterrorism operations in the Philippines with Operation Freedom Eagle. Because of this, the Marine Corps must prepare to execute all forms of military operations and activities particularly humanitarian assistance…
On 3 December 2015, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that all branches of the military must open all combat roles to women within one year. This brings new urgency to the issue of rampant sexual assault and harassment in the U.S. military. Roughly 19,000 U.S. servicemen and servicewomen were sexually assaulted or raped last year while serving their country - that is approximately 52 cases per day. Their assailants by-and-large were other service members. Although roughly 80% of cases go unreported, those who do report often face retaliation from their units or commanding officers.…
Case Study 2. This week’s case study requires that we analyze and discuss the Step Up to Law Enforcement program, which targets the recruiting of women for careers in law enforcement. Our textbook states: “women represent only 11.2 percent of all sworn law enforcement personnel in the United States.” (Walker & Katz, 2013, p. 147)…
Whenever a Marine or Sailor is ordered to join a particular unit, this is cause for joy and satisfaction for many, this for various reasons; In general it is thought that there will be an additional person who will be able to collaborate in everything that needs to be done, this so that the unit thrives. At the same time, the opportunity is born to meet a new person, a new story, and also opens the possibility of creating what could become a long-term friendship. In this way, the arrival of a new member would bring happiness, but would only be so, if we leaders take care of him or her properly during their incorporation. With this in mind, I want to mention that within the leadership positions we occupy, we are at the precise moment within…

A contemporary social issue currently face today that will have an impact on the Marine Corps in 15-20 years is the utilization of technology. Modern technology such as computers and personal hand held devices have its advantage and disadvantages. Computers are able to speed up communications, procedures, and save lives with the use of robots to disarm an improvised explosive device. With the advantages that it brings to the fight, it also has its drawbacks. Technology can take away from important life skills, degrade human interaction, and compromise the Marine Corps security posture.…
