“Eighteen”, written by Maria Banus, I thought was a great selection. I enjoyed viewing the author’s perspective in becoming a young adult in today’s society. Although this was a short poem, it held a lot of meaning behind it that we discussed in class. The only character in “Eighteen” was the author expressing her thoughts of what happened when she turned 18 and couldn’t handle all of life’s offerings at once. I symbolized life as a “hot cup of coffee”, since Maria mentioned in the poem, “…I think of consuming life, but I am burnt, even by the of stream of its juices” The situations in “Eighteen” were hidden by metaphors and similes, which lead to more effectiveness in delivering her message. It had us in class lead to more than one interpretation,
