Marcus Luttrell Character Analysis

Resiliency is “the ability to bounce back.” Resilient people are often the heroes of our stories and the ones we always look up to. Psychology researchers study whether some of us are born more resilient than others. They also wonder whether strength can be taught and what it takes to survive and thrive. One character who embodies the title “resilient” is Marcus Luttrell. Marcus Luttrell is the main character of a book written by himself called, Lone Survivor. In March 1999, he joined the United States Navy and began Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training with Class 226 in Coronado, California. Marcus’s resiliency as a main character is described in his book where he was apart of Seal Team 10 and Operation Red Wing. Marcus’s book starts off when he is a young boy, where he grew up in a military family and began to develop a hard nosed attitude and strong coping skills. From there on the rest of his life was defined by his ability to bounce back. Marcus’s resiliency is not only the fact that he is a Navy Seal it is also defined by the person he is and the situation he was put in. In 2005, his Seal Team was assigned to a mission (Operation Red Wing), to kill or capture a high-ranking Taliban leader. While they were on the mission, a group of goat herders stumbled upon the SEALs. The SEALs decided to let them go due to their innocence.
