He began playing guitar at the age of eight and studied music at the Esteban Salas Conservatory in Cuba. When he became a teenager, he immigrated to the United States with his family as refugees and continued to study music at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. In 1974, he became the first classical guitarist to win the Concerto Artists Guild Competition at the age of 22. In that same year, he made his first appearance at the Carnegie Hall recital, and his performance left the audience in excitement about his skills and his musical interpretation. Eventually, Barrueco started touring around the world and released many albums that featured other musicians.
