Since this time, Pinedale has been best known for its surrounding scenery, and breathtaking views of the Wind River Mountains. Even before the founding of the town, people would pay to be guided through those mountains on fishing, packing, and hunting outings. Herford and Black Angus cattle have been roaming on the ranches in the Green River Valley since long before the town was established. “Ranchers and cowboys, along with their families, were among the early settlers of the region,” (Noble, Pinedale, Wyoming) and still play a role in the identity of the town to this day. Furthermore, the identity of Pinedale has always been celebrated through the local event known as Rendezvous which commemorates Pinedale’s role in the “fur-trade” era between the fur traders and Indians, this being yet another unique aspect of the community’s culture.…

According to the BLM ranger who was about the lead a group of school children, this eleven mile round trip trail climbs 1,400 feet, most of it in the last two and a half miles. The first three miles is open to bikes, which shortens the trip from over six hours to about four. The sign at the trail head says the first three miles are fairly level and the rest moderately strenuous. However, there are some places on the first section that can intimidate all but the most avid biker. The rest is very steep and includes 235 wooden steps in groups of four to fifteen, scattered along the trail.…

There are many places I hold dear to my heart such as traveling to the mountains, visiting my grandma or going down to the Russian River and swimming in the freezing green river. But one particular place that stands out in my memory is Mount Shastina. We have gone to Mount Shastina during times of snow and during times of intense heat, which has exposed me to different activities that depend upon the climate. I have been going there, to McCloud, which is North of Mt. Shasta, with my family for as long as I can remember. In the center of a desert lies our rustic cabin with 3 bedrooms and a nice fireplace to keep us warm.…

In one hike you can get it all: redwood groves, wildflower-filled meadows, rocky outcroppings, cascading creeks and sweeping views. This is Sonoma County at its best, the Pomo Canyon Trail, a 4.5-mile stretch between a wooded campground and Shell Beach. Naturally, unless you bring two cars, enjoying the entire trail would cause you to rack up nine miles. If you start at the Pomo Canyon Campground, you might have to add another mile, as when I hiked it, the campground was closed, and I do not know if it is permanent or seasonal.…

Legends always told: Those who climb Mount Ebott never return. For years, children dared each other to scale the legendary mountain, only to turn back before the steep slopes. Parents warned incessantly never to go near the place, to stay in their homes and villages, safe from whatever unspoken danger loomed about the mountain. It had a certain mysticism to it, one that kept children coming back again and again, staring through the treetops of the surrounding forest. But so far, that mystery failed to entice someone daft enough to actually try it.…

As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat.
