In Person-centered therapy, the clients have to assume a lot of responsibilities in the diagnosis and treatment since the aim is to let them understand their feelings. The role of a therapist would be to deal with the way clients perceive themselves consciously instead of interpreting their unconscious ideas and thoughts. Since gestalt therapy views the client as a whole, the diagnosis and treatment may include asking the client what it means to be depressed and an array of issues such as interactions with others. The therapist has to express empathy and faith in the client to allow him/her believes that he/she can find self-direction. The aim of the above qualities in the treatment process is to train the clients to trust themselves and use the trust to find direction in life. Once the clients perceive that the therapist has faith in their role to find direction in life, it is easy for them to express previously denied feelings. As a therapist, I would listen to her narrate how the problem arose, unravel what hinders her to forget the relationship, and allow her to suggest what would work for her to improve.
Gestalt Therapy can be applied in a case where a depressed client X spoke of ‘bad' part of him which is withdrawal from peers who still occasionally take drugs. In starting stages, as a therapist, I would take X's history. Accordingly, I would get the overall picture of their environmental field, the part the peers has played, and psychological factors. It would then lead me to ascertain whether there are unsatisfied needs due to separation from peers or the drugs played tipped the balance of his moods during withdrawal. Besides, since the therapy is a holistic approach, I can try to question and assess many other influences in his life.
