Madrid is the capital city of Spain. Originally, Toledo had been the capital during the Visigoth era, but when the Moors invaded they made Madrid the capital of Spain because of the strategic position it had in the center of the country right but the Manzanares River. Madrid is the third largest city in the European Union with a population of about 3.2 million within the city. It is the home of the Spanish Monarchs and the governmental buildings that host political events. Madrid is recognized as the financial center of Southern Europe because of the strong economic output. With this is mind top Spanish companies like Iberia and Telefonica have located their head offices in Madrid.
One of the main attractions of Madrid is the Palacio Real (Royal Palace). The palace was built in 1764 and although, the royal family does not currently live in the palace they still use it for public and ceremonial events. The palace is open to the public to visit under a guided tour, where one can see the royal armory, throne room, hall of mirrors and the spectacular gardens. Across the plaza from the palace is “The Almudena Cathedral.” This is the largest Neo-Gothic cathedral in Madrid. This shows that Spain has an ordered society where everybody has a place that does not need rationalization. From Spain’s history we know that ever since the Spanish institution was formed the government is voted by popular vote. Therefore, the Spanish culture is content with their involvement in deciding who is in government. Meaning that the Spanish do not need further justification in nationwide decisions. In comparison, the USA has a republic form of government where they elect the presidential party by popular vote. The difference is that American has a higher freedom of speech a lower power distance
