During this English term, we studied a famous play written by William Shakespeare called Macbeth. I choose the theme of the supernatural for my creative piece. This is one of the most important themes in the play because it is mentioned in the play multiple times in a variety of forms. From the beginning of the play when Macbeth hears the witches prophecies, the hallucination to the ghost of Banquo after he is killed and all the way to prophetic apparitions. The supernatural is the main base of the entire play. It’s the main device which starts the whole play, it’s an essential theme for the play. Without it, the play wouldn’t be complete. And some characters are able to overcome it. I showed this by having some of the witches main ingredients outside the cauldron. In Act 1 scene 3, Banquo says “Were such things here as we do speak about? Or have we eaten on the insane root That takes the reason prisoner?” The main ingredients that have been inside the cauldron are all contained from animals, plants and humans. The quote that Banquo refers to shows he does not consider the prophecies seriously, and rather thinks them as some kind of joke. He also additionally suggest Macbeth to not take it seriously and forget it about it. The cauldron is supposed to show power and importance which has been in controlled by the witches. As the cauldron is one of the key purpose in the supernatural. One of the plants that they put in is a root of a hemlock. The roots are known as poisonous and dangerous. They are specifically known as having stronger roots than any other plants. Even if they are classified as dangerous, they are also one of the dazzling pieces of nature , as some of the hemlocks are not poisonous. In my art piece, the hemlocks that are laying on the ground are represented as Banquo, as he is always loyal to the kingdom and doesn’t let the supernatural affect him. On the other hand Macbeth is represented as the hemlock inside the cauldron.
